Is it normal to walk a cat??

Ok, so this one time I was with my friend in Berkeley, and God knows why this one lady was walking her cat. HER CAT. It was on a leash! Usually, cats just wander around right? This lady seemed bonkers! Who in the world WALKS a cat?? Is this even in a certain cat's nature?

I want to get harnesses to start taking my cats for walks. I don't trust the kids in this town and I don't trust the traffic, no way in hell would I let my babies out there on their own. They're so friendly, I'd be terrified something would happen to them.

Stop being so close-minded and no, that lady isn't bonkers. Some cat breeds are "dog-like" and will leashes. (Siberian (cat), Maine Coon,etc.).

That would make an awesome story for the news! How would you keep it from playing with the leash?

I've actually seen this once in my neighborhood. My mother and I were walking from the store when we spotted a lady holding a leash and from a distance I thought the animal on the end was a dog and I kept thinking "Wow that's a weird looking dog I wonder what breed it is." when we got closer however it turned out to be the lady's cat!

It looked so very odd but some cats love being outdoors so it's better then letting them loose on their own where they can harm wildlife/someone or where something/someone can harm them.

i used to try to get my cat to go to walks because she's overweight, but she'd just plop down and wouldn't move unless i dragged her. kudos to the lady who actually got her cat to walk with her.

Some cats can be walked but I just prefer my cat to not go outside otherwise she will try like hell to get out.

My neighbor walks her cat on a leash. Cat is very used to it.

  • I've seen a few people doing it. As long as the cat has been trained to do it, I really don't see what the problem is.

No this is not normal. My cat would have had a hissy fit when we would put a collar on her. I don't even want to know what she would have done if we ever tried to walk her on a leash! This is a funny story though! I would have taken a picture of it if I were you!

I would of thought it wouldn't work. cats won't go where you tell them. Take them for a drag maybe for a walk noway.

i think its a great idea. too many people let their cats roam the streets and kill a lot of the wildlife around and a lot of them get hit by cars and stolen to just be set on fire or have fire crackers stuck up their butt. i love all animals but dont like irresponsible animal owners. cats shouldnt be treated different just because they come back. they still attack children and kill wildlife and fight other cats and get pregnant. good for her for being responsible.

I've seen it a few times. I've seen people walking ferrets too.

It is kind of a new thing spreading around. I've never seen it personally but I've seen pet-related shows on tv that encourage it for socialization purposes.
If I had a cat I might consider putting it on a leash if I was going to a park or something--give the cat some new experiences.
