Is it normal to want a swan for a pet?

I love swans and for the longest time, I've desired to have one as a pet. The thing is is that I don't know if they are tameable, legal to own or be potty trained. I've heard that they can have tempers and attack people. However, what if I managed to get one as a baby as raise it, would it have a sweeter disposition? I already have a cat and a dog so I'd have to wait until I was out of college to have one. I'm not trolling, I'm serious about this. Is it normal?

You'd have to look into your state's laws. (If US.) In most cases, what you don't see in a pet store -and sometimes what you do see- requires certain license types. A lot of exotic animals you just plain aren't allowed to own.

Whatever you decide, please follow the guidlines of your state laws. They are there to protect the animal(s), the person(s), and the environment. Thank you. <3

He'll also have to buy pounds and of seafood for it. Seafood can be very expensive so in order for him to save money, he'd constantly have to go fishing for it. Another thing is that Dolphins can be dangerous and extremely horny.

        • You'd have to have a walk-in freezer for all that fish too.

Or maybe he could live in a boat on the sea. He could create a special harness for his dolphin and she could pull his boat to whatever deserted island he wanted. Then he could collect some food and water for the days that they stay out at sea. And she could help him find fish to eat too, even catch it for him and toss it in his boat.

There was a story a few years ago about a guy who wanted to eat a swan. I personally think that they're too beautiful to be eaten, but I think they were hunted in the past.

Swans are temperamental, they make HUGE messes, smell funny, and apart from looking at them from a distance they are useless. I think having a "pet" swan would be a curse!

    • I used to have a pet duck when I was a kid. A mallard, her name was Fluffy (I know, not very original). She was afraid of any body of water larger than her water dish. She followed me everywhere too. I miss her.

Yes and no. You could have a pet swan but the scenario wouldn't be a typical "pet" thing. It would more just be a bird that lives around water in or near your property. I wouldn't have thought keeping swans would be much different from keeping geese. They're too independent to be "petted" but yes, you could actually keep them. Be prepared for mess, though, and lots of it.

If you're British, you may want to look into the legality as well, because the Queen technically owns all non-migratory swans. They've been "royal" birds for 900 years.

Aww, ducks are wonderful. They're nice and quacky and never as angry as geese or swans. Although if you still wanted dealings with swans there are lots of charities which help swans that have fallen foul of anglers' lines or fishing hooks or lead shot. Someone told me they were helping a swan and it trusted them enough to fall asleep with its head on their hand. So cute.

The queen owns all non-migratory swans? I have never heard of such a thing! What a strange thing to own!

She also owns all British beaches down to the high tide mark. If a dead animal gets washed up, it becomes hers. That's the fun of living in a country with thousand year old laws; some of them are nuts!

Ha! I wonder what she would do if i started stealing her "washed up dead animals"!?

We have some fun laws but not like that! For example, you cannot sit on a street corner in St. Louis MO and drink beer out of a bucket. Bottles are fine, cans are fine, hell trash cans are okay, but not a bucket!

Strange, but awesome:) I think it's also illegal to kill Water birds. I was reading the book About a Boy and the boy, Marcus, had killed a duck and he was terrified of being sent to jail. I don't know what happens if the law realizes that you accidentally killed one, but It's a good way to keep animal cruelty in check.
