Is it normal to want to commit suicide or die by the age of 30?

I once dated a guy who swore he wanted to die or commit suicide by 30 because he couldn't stand the thought of being old. I wouldn't consider this normal behavior (plus he turned out to be a jealous psycho) but...

Have you ever had similar thoughts -- whether serious or fleeting?

Not so much the thought of being "old" but being confined to a chair and crapping my pants uncontrollably. after a certain point in life once the "quality of life" is pretty much gone I just want to die. Why the hell would I want to sit in a chair looking out a window while crapping my pants. Just let me die at that point. Most people feel that way about a dog that got hit by a vehicle and needs a limb aputated. They would put the dog down. At that point in life put me down.

First off, 30 is not an old age. The 30's as well as the 40's are still young.
When I was younger, I considered 40 to be the being of the end and I wished that I would die either by my own hand or natural causes. I was being silly and while it is hard for me to visualize myself being in my 30's or my 40's, I don't want to miss that experience. I want to live as long as I possibly can and continue to be able to contribute to this universe we live in. The only thing I'm not looking forward to is becoming elderly. I don't want to see my friends die or my deterioration. It's depressing.

If he feels the same when he's 30 I'll be very surprised.

    • I'm sure he was. But boy did he know how to manipulate my lil 14-year-old heart (he was 20)...but that's a different story.

Sure, I know I'll off myself eventually. There's nothing wrong, I have everything and every one I need, so don't look for signs of a mental issues here.

30 is too young, but I'm aiming to be out of here by 50. Since I'm not planning to have a significant other or kids, after my parents pass away I'll be free to take off anytime. Although, who knows, maybe I'll start some life-project that will take longer than 50. I'm not in a hurry.

Good thing I'm not him, or I'd be dead already. I'm over 30 and I don't feel old at all. Although I didn't consider 30 "old" when I was 15, either. I just saw it as double 15 lol.

No, this isn't normal. Please don't kill yourself over age, it's just a number.
Imagine how many people will cry and miss you over your death. I hoped I helped (=

All those hippies back in the day used to say "don't trust anyone over 30".

    Look at 'em now.

30 isn't old, but it isn't young. It's like the midpoint of your life, you're half way over with your life.

I can understand not wanting to get old...
Our society has such a stigma on age. We glorify young people with firm bodies and nice skin to the point of alienating those that would be considered past their prime instead of honoring them. Younger generations are trending towards an attitude of lack of respect for the older people in our society whereas they should be honored.

    However, 30 is not old.

To a 50 year old, 30 is spring chicken young. To a 70 yo, it's forty years ago. To an 80 yo, it's half a decade... and so on. Conclusion - 30 is young. It's only old to a ten year old. At fifteen, I was well aware that I was half way to 30. What a bizarre view on life this guy must have.

    • He was an immature 20-year-old looking for ways to manipulate my lil young heart. Many years later, I am now his age...and heck no, I wouldn't off myself at 30 -- or ever, actually.
