Is it normal: to want to grow up around the 80's

Recently I've been hearing stories about when my parents grew up, and I just saw Super 8 which took place then. It seems so much more fun &safe. Like I could go out and do anything without worrying. Also I love the music they had back then. I wish I grew up back then , is this normal?

It was overrated if you ask me. People were more racist, sexist and homophobic. It wasn't any safer than today in my opinion except there wasn't as much traffic so I suppose the roads were safer to a degree, tho I know of many people who would drink and drive, and have races in cars, but in the same town today you couldn't get away with that, as we have speed cameras and speed bumps! And all those large coins in your pocket! (I'm from uk). And when mobile phones came out they weren't much smaller than bricks and there were no iPods and laptops and all that technology we have now. School was so different then! I'd rather today, but then I have lived through both and can compare. And we didn't know any different. Ok, I feel old now :0(

Ah 70's where the best mate. Drugs where cheap and recrational. In the 80's things started to become a pumping business...

I grew up in the 80's and loved it. I feel sorry for kids today, they are really missing out on so much. There was so much freedom as a kid in the 80's. At a young age, we were allowed to go and explore, build forts, ride bikes all over town etc. No parents watching over our every move, no sitting in front of the tv or computer all day. No there was no Facebook but you saw your friends so much more face to face. I loved it and am so glad I was born when I was.

Movies and memories tend to paint incorrect pictures. I mean, people tend to try and forget the bad times. Dont get me wrong, Im sure the 80's were great, but nothing is ever totally safe. Police used to beat ethnic people in the 80's for just being ethnic.....

It's a little weird, but not unheard of. But remember that because your parents grew up during that time, they probably look back at those times with rose-tinted glasses, meaning they remember it being better than it probably was.

Just think, back then the video games were incredibly primitive, their was no internet, you couldn't download music like you can now, and while we look back at classic films like Caddyshack, Scarface, The Breakfast Club, etc., they couldn't just watch them all back then, because a lot of them hadn't even been made yet. Now, we can find any movie from that era in seconds. So, I would rather live in this time, to be honest.

  • Reagan years are better than Obama years! I would much rather live in the 80's, or the 70's. The music was better.

I love all the comments about people being more sexist, racist, etc. in the '80s. As though we aren't at this very moment more divided than ever before in this nation. Yeah right.

I was born in '74 and spent my formative years in the '80s. Yes, time makes those days seem rosier. There were some bad times for certain. But the truth is there is no other decade I would rather have been a part of. Perhaps the '50s would be a distant second.

The most amazing thing about growing up in the 1980s was the feeling that you were experiencing America at it's highest high. People were happy, healthy, and wealthy (on the whole). And we were bombarded by new and exciting ways to enjoy life. Pop culture in the '80s essentially mirrored our actual culture.

Fascinating as the culture was, it was everyday life that made it truly special. Our childhood freedom was still in tact, but there was more to do with it than in the decades before it. We felt like we were on the cusp of so many new things (especially technological breakthroughs) but they weren't interfering with normal life yet. Kind of like the excitement you feel when you're working on some project you really love. Then when it's finished and it's time has passed, it isn't quite as special. That was the '80s. The exciting time of discovery and anticipation. That's the best way I can describe it.

Although I was a born in 82, as a kid, I remember the 80s being amazing. All about family, less drama in the world, the world was not filled with fear and rock n roll was awesome! And nothing like 80s comedies

I was alive in the 80s and it WAS better. WAY better actually. Things are really bad. I also think you are fascinated with it because the 80s have seen a resurgance in popularity particularly with teenagers. In the 90s teenagers was obsessed with the 70s. I guess decades come back into fashion after 20 or so years.
