Is it normal to want to learn alchemy?

Everyone knows what alchemy is but I don't think most people really understand what it was or how it worked. From what I know about Alchemy is sounds like the most basic form of chemistry. Although its flawed and not as accurate as modern chemistry I still want to know what it was. Is it normal to be interested in subjects that means nothing in today society? I have done this with thinks like greek/roman mythology and Roman numerals too. This kind of stuff is useless and everyone knows it. So its is normal to still want to learn about it? Also I put this in school because there is not an education section. I am not pursuing this is school.

  • My alchemy skill in skyrim is at level 100...just sayin...

I honestly used to be very interested in alchemy and even tried searching for alchemy colleges. I wanted to be some kooky old woman in a little potion shop hunched over old alchemic instruments and journals... and eventually turn lead into gold and be a super rich kooky old lady.

...Everyone can dream :) and I think you are definitely normal. You are like a hipster scientist.

Yeah, it's normal to be interested in different technologies, etc from history.

I'm interested in stuff like that too. Not alchemy specifically, but old historical technologies that are obsolete. I even own an old type writer and I love using it, despite their being computers.

I don't think they are the same thing. Roman numerals have become out of use because they are more impractical than Arabic when it comes to the algebra we use in everyday life. Alchemy has been proven wrong by scientific methods. You would be learning about the mistakes other people made in the past. If that is of any interest to you, then go ahead, it's your brain and you are free to fill it with anything you feel like.

There is a school of thought in academia that humans have lost the ability to do things such as magic, witchcraft and alchemy. I firmly believe that some of the tales of those things are rooted, at least partially, in fact. They are just too deeply imbedded in the fabric of our past to be complete fantasy.

It's not quite correct to say that alchemy is the predecessor to chemistry, but it wouldn't be wrong, either.

Chemistry arose by applying the scientific method to some of the experiments performed in alchemy, and thus eroding the spiritual element over time. Alchemy is still practiced today, but it is decidedly not a science, at least not in any meaning of the term that the general scientific community would consider valid.

Alchemy is more of a religious, spiritual practice than a scientific one, but it holds some of the aesthetic trappings of science, what with the bubbling alembics and strange brine it produces.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to learn about it, nor in trying it if you wish to see for yourself whether or not it works, but remember that there is a reason the pills you get from your doctor were created by chemists, not alchemists.

Alchemy is an ancient art. A true alchemist is a spiritual adept who can add Unconditional love energies of electrons and Unceasing light energies of protons to transform lead or tin into gold. Modern alchemy includes infusing Love energies into food and other products as well.

Same here. My understanding is that Alchemy is the mystical version Chemistry.

I have a lot of books on the subject. I tent to take a metaphorical or Jungian approach to metaphysical subjects, so I see a lot of value in alchemy and magic.

Don't hesitate to learn about anything that seems weird. If it's all make-believe and of no real value, you'll get bored with it eventually. There isn't a sociopolitical structure to keep you in it.

Soon it may be useless to learn handwriting, 'cause most people will just be using computers or tablets.

Yeah its normal, you might want to be careful though, read up on it etc. A while ago someone who went to my school wanted to do it after playing too much "Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" He put himself in hospital for 2 weeks after ingesting his "Creation" turns out the flowers and things he ground down with a pestle and mortar was quite toxic. He wont be doing that again.
