Is it normal to want to leave art school?

I map out my current situation best if I make lists. :)

1. Credit card is maxed out and I'm $700+ in debt.
2. Bank account is negative $150+.
3. I took out school loans for two years and I've been paying for the rest out of pocket.
4. I'm going to school part-time and I have three more years to go (I've been enrolled for already three years).
5. My rent is due in two days and my paycheck won't pay for it.
6. I work full-time at a great job and barely can't afford anything.
7. Due to working full-time, my grades have been terrible and now my school has put me on "probation" until my GPA is up to standard.
8. I haven't learned anything at this school.

So, there you have it. The current dilemma. I pay a heavy price for attending a school that teaches me nothing. I want to be an artist. I really don't need a piece of paper to do that. But, maybe I need to go to a different school and have a fresh start? Should I quit my current school, save up money for a year and start at one I think might help me make it in the art world? And how do I solve my current financial mess? Don't say ask family for help because I've done that already. They won't help me. :(

where do you go to school? most important thing is setting your priorities right then going at it head first. your top one would be paying your rent so you don't get kicked out and then your debt

The bigger question is how will dropping out help your current situation of being in the hole? If you have a legit plan..go for it. If not then try to stick it out and come up with a better solution. Your problems will follow if you drop out and start new at another school. Also, with most loans if you drop out during the semester you have to pay money back. It's harder to return to school once you've dropped out...I tell you this from experience. Try to be strong and I wish you luck!!

Wow -- there is SO much to learn about art. I find great meaning in an art education, but I won't go into that now; that's not your question.... I suggest getting out of that school. It is a waste of time and money if you are getting nothing in return. You certainly sound goal-oriented and not the slightest bit lazy so i imagine that you and the school are simply not a good fit. I think you should continue forward with your dream, but perhaps take a little time to reevaluate and get out of debt. Research other schools. Make art on your own time. Keep your good job. You will have a much better experience in school if you are not so stretched thin and stressed out.

  • Dude?

Why didn't set your loans back until after you graduated? Or did you ??? If you did, ask if you can set it back then that way you can go to school without paying anything until after graduation.

But yeah, if you don't feel like the school is for you. Switch!
