Is it normal to want to travel in relative comfort?

I'm not talking Four Seasons and first class airfares, just basic standards like a clean motel with a private bathroom, decent food, stuff like that. Not sleeping in a tent or taking showers every 2 weeks or something.

I see backpackers on the road and I know I could never do something like that. Not that I have anything personal against them, but it's just not the way I want to go about seeing a new country. I had the unfortunate experience of staying in a few youth hostels some years ago, and it's not something I'd want to ever repeat.

So, is it normal to want to travel the way I do?

I think that's the way most people travel.

If I'm traveling on business I feel exactly the same - I need a private, comfortable room, that's safe to leave my laptop in. I need to be able to work in the evening, and well rested for the next day.

If you're traveling for fun, especially if it's somewhere far away like Cambodia or Bolivia, you can have a lot of fun in the cheaper places. They're great for meeting other backpackers, while in a 5* hotel people tend to ignore each other.

But do what you want - it's your travels, not anyone else's.
