Is it normal to want to "waste money" to go to france?

For the past few weeks I've been debating with my mom whether or not I should go to Paris, France with some people from school on a "field trip" for the French Honor Society club. The price hasn't been exactly established; the more people that go, the less it will cost everyone individually. I have the money, but it was mostly from gifts and loans from my mom. I was hoping to get a better grasp of the culture and maybe try my lingual skills out on some native speakers. My mom says that it's a waste of money because it isn't essential for my education and I won't do anything else there but waste more money on souveniers, food, and clothes. I know the economy doesn't really call for such an expenditure, but am I being stupid by reeaaaalllly wanting to go? (Maybe some opinions from people who have been to France would help?)

What an excellent chance. Widening your experiences is much more educational than trying to swallow knowledge from the classroom.

If you really don't want to waste money, then don't buy more clothes (you already have them) and don't buy lots of pointless souvenirs. Try to get something that's meaningful and maybe even free. Or just take a bunch of photos. Obviously, you're going to spend money on food, but that's not a waste! Unless you're willing to starve yourself for a few weeks.

I really hope that you go. Best of luck.

    i highly recommend it.

travel is a passion of mine, france being one of the many places i've seen.

this will be an educational experience, and those school trips are much cheaper than how the rest of us travel.

First of all, you could probobly get a discount if you are going through your school so it wont be as much money. Second, you may be able to get college credit for the trip. If not it will look great on any future resumes anyway. Speaking from personal experience, I have been on several exchange programs and loved it! Travelling is an unforgettable experience that is well worth the money because you will remember it for the rest of your life. It may not be essential to your education but it will still be a very educational experience. In my opinion there is no better way to spend your money than travel. I am guessing that your mom has not travelled much or she would understand the value of it more. You should tell her honestly how much it means to you. Afterall, these oppertunities don't come around everyday and if you don't go you may end up regretting it.

It's normal to want to go, but you should respect what your mom says. It's her money, not yours, and honestly, a week or two in France is not going to help your ability to speak French! A couple of weeks in France will only give you enough time to waste a little money.

Maybe you can go on a study abroad trip in college, and you can spend a whole year in France.

Traveling to other countries is never a waste of money. It's a chance of a lifetime, especially since you are going with a group and with the intention to learn. I hope you make it, have fun!
