Is it normal to wonder what everybody's laughing out loud about?

Today--just today--I've come across someone who wrote "I get migraines all the time, LOL," another who wrote "I am officially failing Russian right now LOL," and a third who wrote "LOL so sad John Lennon was murdered by that lunatic." Is it normal to wonder: WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE THESE PEOPLE LAUGHING OUT LOUD ABOUT? Does this phrase even MEAN anything anymore?

To me "LOL" is more like "Lack of Laughter" than "Laughing out Loud". I rarely use lol, but when I do, it's to express the total lack of humour in the situation. Judging by OPs post, that's what it means to most people these days.

Today "LOL" lost its original meaning (as abbreviation) and now it is used more as "heh".

Instead of "LOL" people nowadays use "ROFL", "ROFLMAO", "LOOOOOL!!" etc. because the original "LOL" lost its power.

I use it sometimes kind of sarcastically, although I've always used it to means lots of laughs. However, I think some people who are either fairly young or older but new to the Internet (like my dad-age 70) really don't have any idea what it stands for.
