Is it normal to write short stories using song lyrics as inspiration?

I want to start writing again. But I am always at a point where I am lost as to what to write. You know how when you listen to certain songs a story can play out in your head (kind of like a music video you've directed yourself to go along with the song)? I want to put that on paper, but use the lyrics as a guiding point. However, that kind of strikes me as emo (the stage I was submerged in between age 14 and 17). Can this be done with some sort of original flair?

yeah, sure , i have done this. um... yeah, i'm emo (no homo). it is usually called a song-fic and is very common in one of my hobbies, fanfiction (not the stereotype "everyone fucks everyone" kind of thing though")

Oh wow a reformed emo. You would be an interesting person to talk to. God they all died out huh? And you took half the goths who were misconstrued as emo and hence gave up on goth with you!
Anyway that's beside the point. I think it is a great idea what you are doing, but I would be careful about broadcasting anything like this online as people can steal your ideas.

I'm not sure how this relates to intellectual property theft, but it may. I would look into that, first.

Song lyrics are what got me to write short stories. I don't write anymore, but I know where you're coming from. I don't know if this will help you, but whenever I was writing and hit writers block I would just go to sleep thinking about where I left off in the book. When I woke up, for some reason I would know what to write in order to finish off that section of the story. So basically, a nap might help.

  • You could link up your lyrics with a favourite figurative art photograph or painting. And tell a story about the art using the lyrics as emotional inspiration.

    I don't know, maybe that's a dumb idea. I tried. :/
