Okay, this came from a story by Allistalla a few weeks ago but - prior to that - a post from Shackleford96, and - prior to that - a discussion between dom180 and dappled (in which both wimped out of recording their voices). It all revolves around our many and various accents. We seem to talk about it often (there was even a question today about how we pronounce "often").

Well, Mister Shackleford and Mister dappled talked about this and decided that perhaps something more could be done. And it has now come to pass. You can hear both those fine men speak at:

The site also contains instructions about how you can involve yourself in this project and share your own voice with the is it normal community.

We have the permission of TheManagement but this project is nothing to do with this website or its creators. All responsibility lies with a third party.

    Holy shit Shackleford sounds way older than 20.

      Hehe, rape is an improvement on what some people think. I went out with a very posh girl for a while and she always referred to me as "the axe-murderer" because my real accent is one of the rougher ones in this country.

      You also missed out on the bananaface, which was up there temporarily. I'm biased, though, because she comes from a place with accents I've always loved.

      Biggest surprise was Yuma's, though. I actually want her to narrate my entire life. I love the way she speaks!

        A big indeed to all of your points. I would never be so brave, as to post my voice on here for everyone to make fun of it. If anyone heard me speak they would think my IQ had dropped 50 points over night.

          Don't be shy. :)

          This is great because up until hearing their human voices, I imagined everyone on IIN talks like a cartoon character. Sort of as if they inhaled some helium. Hearing people's real voices has been a definite improvement on what I'd imagined up for them.

          In my mind, you don't have the helium voice though - you are an exception; you have the voice of a 90-year-old man. If you sound different than that, I think you should let me hear it. :)

    EDIT: Should I do a recording? If I do, I have to do one today because I will have no wifi for a week... If so, ahT should I say? Should I recite something, or just talk to you guys?

    Ooh, this is a great idea!
    Everyone's voices sound so different to how I had imagined them; it will change how I read their comments in future!

        I find it odd that people seem to like English accents! Most people here dislike a lot of them; I guess it gets tiring when you are surrounded by them all the time?
        (But then, it could just be down to this nation's love of complaining.)

            Could you work out where it was from, though? I thought I had a good ear but I really can't work it out because it sounds like there's more than one accent in there.

    I have a sort of country-american voice though.

    I say tater instead of potato; It's Off-ten, not off-en; I tend to say cimomon instead of cinnamon; a trailer is a traylar; an opossum is a Possum; aluminum is alloominum...

    That's all the examples I can think of right now. ^_^

    I am going to try and do this myself!

    I wonder where shackleford is from, because he talks very similar to me, with a slight hint of a little more of the south. I live in the south now but talk rather northern for the U.S. because I was raised up north.

    Dappled sounds right like a damn narrator in a movie! Move to the United States with that accent Mr. Dappled, and you will be very popular with the ladies me thinks!

            At least you understood me. :P That's my real accent when sober around other Mancunians (it gets stronger still with a drink). I know most people think it's weird having more than one accent, but I kind of have to. :)

            P.S. One day my monkey will take on Vegas' monkey to see who is the all-time monkey master. :D

    Just read the work by Dave Eggars, I have to say it's interesting, hearing how everyone sounds. Shackleford's texas accent sounds great, especially while reading Lincolns address. Dom180 accent sounds great. And like Parrish said, Neuro in the shower equals hot.

        Thanks, I honestly would have been somewhat sad if I didn't see it on the website after going through the trouble of rehearsing the excerpt a few times so as not to stumble repeatedly. I've never been particularly good at reading aloud.

          Ahh, if you use Windows just plug in a microphone and use Sound Recorder. If you've got a laptop with a webcam, you probably won't even need a mike.

          As for Apple people, I don't know because I'm not an Apple person at all despite having an apple in the middle of my IIN username.

            Oh, go on then :) I sent it across, hopefully it all works (I refuse to trust my iPod, but it should all be fine). I will say in advance that my lisp is worse if I'm saying something spontaneous, but I think you can still hear it here anyway :/ I also have a higher posh : farmer ratio of tones, which I don't like, and if I sound a little bit hyper and caffeinated, it's because, well, I am :P

            Now I'll go listen to yours! :D

        It is the coolest thing and incredibly nice of the OP to set it up for us.

        I think everyone feels weird about their recorded voice. I know that I do!

        Don't worry about how you sound. I was so busy focusing on not screwing up any of the words in that crazy poem (a poem I have not read in 20 years), it left little room to be self-conscious about my tone. It took me seven tries before I had a recording that didn't end in coughing or cursing because I said "slithy" or "tulgey" wrong. I just locked the pets out of the room (too chatty and noisy) and got on with it.

        I hope more people are able to make recordings. :)

          I'm not sure there is a proper way of pronouncing it all. Although you pronounce everything the same way as me (except slithy, mine rhymes with dizzy). I recorded a version of myself saying but I didn't want to put it up in case it looked like a competition or something. :/

          I couldn't put up a Gettysburg in my real accent, either, because I think it would make Americans think I was being rude about it.

            I naturally wanted to say slithy that way too! But I looked up the American pronunciation and went with that instead.

            Could you please post your version of the Jabberwocky? I don't think it is competitive, just very interesting, for comparison sake. :)

            I avoided the Address too, for a different reason though. This year is the 100-year anniversary of the Canadian/American war of 1812 (which the Canadians won), so that's been on my mind lately. My reading would sound "normal" enough, but maybe it would be too cheeky of me to read and record it since I'm Canadian. I'm probably just being silly about it though.

    I heard this a while ago. I wonder if any of the more enigmatic users have recorded since. I thought everyone sounded good. Where can I find this post? I currently do not plan to record my own voice.

      It's up! :) Anyone else who wants to use iTalk Recorder, it's no problem for me to convert what it produces to MP3. If you get the choice of what to save it as, AIFF is fine. :)

        Well if I find something to record my voice on. I kind of lost my Mp3 player that had a voice recorder. My computer and cell phone don't seem to have a voice recorder either but I'll find my Mp3 eventually.

        And I still "might" put my voice on there. I personally don't like my own voice but we'll see when I record it. haha

      lol, that's better than lc1988's opinion that I was Edgar Allen Poe. And I really wish you would submit your voice. This is for everyone. It's also a good opportunity for people to notice each other a bit more, because we're all on a level playing field on the voice website. It's just a list of names. I do hope you'll add yours. :)

        Hehehe I'm still thinking about it. I coulndt even try over the weekend so we'll see what happens. I liken my accent to a new Yorker and a valley girl had a baby, that baby grew up and had a baby with a stoner pirate. That's my accent :)

      Yay! Good on you. And yeah, I've already got other people who are doing it. The story didn't get approved, which is why there's been little response but then TheManagement kindly offered to approve it temporarily. Now people are commenting on it, it'll move up through the list of stories and more people should notice it. :)

      EDIT: NeuroNeptunian has already sent hers and NoraBaker is joining us, so you won't be alone. :)

              I know exactly how you feel because when mine went up, I thought I'd made the biggest mistake of my life. But now I'm just used to it being there.

              P.S. I deleted yours off the server too as well as removed it from the page, so it's truly gone. Although I'm very glad I got to hear it. :)

    EDIT: Ahh fuck it, he can suck a wing ding. I don't know what file format Windows Media Audio File is, but I hope you can accept it, is it WAV? I don't know shit about software. If not, then tell me what to do or whatever, I'll do something else.
