Is it nornal to welcome new ideas...

My teenager has important exams coming up in the next few months and I am desperately thinking of ways that I could help or encourage him to study so that he will do well. I have bought and read books on revision and memory techniques. I don't want to add more pressure on him but want to give him every opportunity to do well. I would welcome any ideas you may have. Do you think it's normal for me to get so actively involved?

    "Nornal" Teehee.

Most parents want the best for their child, DUH! But most children don't want too much pressure from their parents. Ask him if he wants some help revising. He's got to be willing to accept your help or it won't work.

I'm a visual learner, so visual cues help me remember text or numerical data. For an exam about Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night" I imagined each act happening in a different part of the journey from my bedroom to the local shops in chronological order. The good thing about this method is you're already familiar with the locations, you just insert the characters and actions.

There are lots of other methods, as I'm sure you're aware. Some additional good ones are turning information into songs or poems as well as having pictures symbolising the words (flash cards).

Remember though, people learn and retain information in different ways; what's effective for one person isn't necessarily effective for another. Try and find out what way your son learns best. Also consider the revision environment; some people can only concentrate in a quiet room alone, others learn better with someone else (especially a fellow student rather than a parent), others revise effectively in a noisy, busy environment.

It's good you want to support your son, just try and get the balance between helping and interfering right :)

    • That's a brilliant idea to set the sceness!! My son's a typical contrary hormonal teenager who wants to roam but he does get A marks if I pretend to get cross. I said when he goes back to school I will help him devise a revision timetable. He is an auditary learner rather than visual unfortunately, so quite often I have to read notes and chapters to him. However, I have found some sites to download actors performing plays onto an MP3.
