Is it possible to break your neck and die bumping your head on a beam?

It happened to me except for the neck-snapping part. I hit the beam pretty hard and still have muscle pain. It got me wondering if you can die from something like this which seems like it would be pretty common especially if you're tall, like I am.

I'm 6'4", and worked on submarines during my time in the Navy. I have no idea how many times I whacked my head on low-hanging metal work, and I've scrapped, hit, and grazed my head innumerable times on other things during my life. If I ever go completely bald, I'm sure there will be lots of very interesting scars visible.

So I have lots of experience hitting my head on stuff, and I recognise the lingering muscle-ache you describe. I've always assumed that's a result of my muscles snapping taut in a reflex reaction to the impact shoving my head in one direction or another.

I've never actually knocked myself out, and I'd like to believe that it isn't possible for a healthy person to break their neck from this sort of low-speed impact.

If you're young, you're still getting used to the hazards of being tall. After a while, it becomes instinctive to duck anytime you approach something just above eye-level and you become very aware of such hazards. Having said that, we've lived in a old house with doors that are less than 6' high for more than four years now and I still hit my head. I fairly quickly got used to placing my steps and doing the ducks I needed to make to avoid slamming my scalp into the sharp-edged doorframes, but I'm still occasionally caught out if someone or something distracts me as I'm making my moves.

There are lots of positive things about being taller than average, but one big downside is that you have to get used to knocks on the head. Even minor scalp wounds bleed like crazy, and the blood trickling down your face can look very dramatic, but they rarely require medical attention.

I hate that moment when I used to bump my head getting out of the van when I was sitting in the back seat, you know... you have to crouch a bit before jumping off...and then *Badump*

Reminds me of that show, 1000 ways to die

It’d be hard to break your neck walking into a beam. Your body compensates for the impact. But you could definitely mess yourself up! My brother-in-law is really tall and needs to always watch for that kind of stuff.
