I don't think it will happen, Putin isn't stupid enough to attack NATO, and NATO won't do anything other than sanctions. Ukraine looks fucked though; I'd be interested to see how much land they take.
It's not what they can initially take.
It's what they can hold long term. I don't think they will be able to hold it - and will be eventually driven out.
Remember how the Afghans drove Russia out after the US gave them shoulder launched truck/tank/aircraft missiles. The Russian body count was horrendous.
The Ukrainian people will fight for years... and the US and other western countries will supply them forever.
My prediction is that within a year there will not be a single operational Russian tank in Ukraine, and almost all Russian vehicles will have been destroyed, along with many Russian helicopters, and some other aircraft.
The Russian body count will again be horrendous.
This much is abundantly clear. I wouldn't be suprised if North Korea attempts to seize South Korea either, although it's less likely that China taking Taiwan.
At this point in time I wouldn't be surprised if North Dakota tried to take South Dakota.
The world's gone insane.
China isnt directly supporting the action. Which is a good sign considering the circumstances. Theres a difference between invading a former soviet state and invading an island that's armed and defended on every side.
North korea would need a hell of a trump card. They have zero allies besides china, use extremely outdated equipment and their entire society is looking for a chance to escape the obvious dictatorship because 95% of the population isnt stupid enough to belive Kim's bullshit
I don't think that will happen.
That's a naval invasion to make it happen, and would be a naval battle... and the US would be involved.
China's navy might win against the US the 1st day... but will certainly loose based on what sails over the horizon on day 2 through 4.
Yeah, it's normal to be reprogrammed to be afraid of WW3 now that the COVID fear campaign is falling apart. Emergency powers must be maintained at all costs.
I'm convinced that WWIII won't start until Hungary and Japan declare war on America, Russia, Spain, and Greece.
It's not impossible that there will be another global conflagration. I wouldn't be surprised if, somewhere way down in Putin's resentful, paranoid, scheming brain, there's the idea that his eternal fame will be ensured if he's the guy in charge when Russian wins the Great Patriotic War Part Two, and the glory of the Soviet Union is restored.
One can only hope that there are people with some common sense in the lower chain of command in Russia, and nobody will do something incredibly stupid.
In any case, worrying about this is pointless. There's literally not a single thing anyone here can do which would prevent Putin from taking a gamble on going for broke.
Where the fuck is the UN in all this?
I don't think I've heard them mentioned at all in the media.
I watched the conference at 2am. Bunch of countries condemning the action.
That's what the UN does just condemns actions. But russia needs to get kicked off the security council for invading an independent democratically elected country under the guise of peace while shooting missiles at towns and shelling schools.
There was an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council (called by Ukraine) underway at the very moment that the Russians began invading Ukraine. The Russian ambassador was chairing the meeting because it happens to be Russia's turn. The Ukrainian ambassador was getting messages from Kyiv about cruise missiles and artillery shells landing in Ukraine and tanks charging across the border, but the Russian ambassador claimed he knew nothing about that. The Ukrainian ambassador suggested he pop out of the meeting to call Moscow and ask his boss, the noxious, arrogant, slime-bucket Lavrov (he didn't actually call him that), what was going on, but the Russian just shrugged and said - in diplomatic language, of course - that he really didn't give a shit.
So that's what the UN has been doing - same-o, same-o. The UN is a great idea, but as long as there are people like Putin running powerful countries, it's ability to do anything useful is extremely limited.
