Is it rude for foreigners to talk/whisper in their language ?

I mean people in line/at a bank/shopping who obviously speak English, talking around others who don't speak their language...especially whispering. Maybe Im paranoid but I think its rude. They are probably talking about something innocuous but it makes me think they are saying something about me or something not nice. I speak two languages but I was taught you don't speak privately or whisper when youre interacting with a third person in public.

Actually I prefer foreign farts. There's a hint of spice to them.

I agree. But I dont think it is rude if the third person is a random stranger who just happens to be around you

Sadly it is something that will always exist because some people dont care, others arent aware it is rude, and the rest do it cause they are more comfortable/fluent talking in another language than English.

I think its rude if its family or friends of yours, but what complete strangers are talking about is none of your business.

Recently I was in line at a grocery store and three hispanics were in front of my friend and I: The oldest hispanic male asked his son who was paying, in spanish, "Why are you calling that white man "sir" and saying "thank you?"... The kid angrily responded, "Dad knock it off". The dad started laughing and nudging his much younger son. The oldest son took the money from the cashier and left before his dad and brother.
Only my friend and I understood the conversation/situation. It was pretty shitty of him to question his son, simply because he was being respectful and kind. Not to mention set such a shitty example for the youngest son.

Sometimes people are saying "rude" things, hoping you do not understand. In this case, we did.

    • Maybe that's why Im paranoid. I speak perfect Spanish but I look white so people often speak Spanish around me thinking I don't know(sometimes rude stuff)...

It is not so much rude as it is lazy. You're also probably being a bit paranoid.

It's rude if you're in a group and a couple or more just go off in their own language.

But if it's some random strangers near you at a mall or bank or anywhere else, it's not rude at all. In fact it's none of your business, they're strangers!

Quit being self centered. Don't have time to worry about you. & Mind your own business.

If their conversation includes someone who doesn't speak that language, I definitely agree. Shutting them out isn't cool. But if they're just in a public place talking between themselves I don't really see the rudeness. Outsiders don't have a right to eavesdrop :P

    • That's exactly what I mean...IM the one interacting with them. Example, this couple always come in to buy small things at my store and the entire time Im talking to them, ringing them up, they are tittering and often laughing in Slavic or whatever. It gives the impression they are talking about ME. I think that when youre interacting with a person even if its a lowly shop manager or a ticket seller or whatever, its rude and a bit creepy.

I was going to say whether it's rude or not is situational. After reading this, I can say that definitely yes, it's rude. Even if they aren't talking about you, they're treating you like you don't even matter.
You may want to be this specific when creating a poll next time, so people understand the question you're really trying to ask. Otherwise they'll think you're generalizing.. which was indeed the turnout here.

If it were a stranger in line at a store, then I wouldn't consider it rude. As TheJester said, it's none of your business what they're talking about.

I would consider it rude when I'm interacting with a person and then they'd switch to their language to talk to the third person. I find that rather annoying too.

BUT, don't judge them too soon. The person might have difficulties speaking English. Moreover, it might be utterly weird for them to switch to English to talk to someone they knew for a long time. For example, I was never able to switch to English when I talked with my dad, because it was just too weird. It's only when I started to forget my native language so thoroughly that I started speaking in English with him, just because it became much easier.

    So there :)

They have the right to speak whatever language they wish while speaking to each other. It's really none of your business.

    • Of course they have the 'right' I have the 'right' to give you the finger...the question is, is it rude if they are talking/interacting with me and then go and whisper in their own language...

Well that's not what your post said. You said people in line at the bank and stuff... so don't ask one thing then change it Miss Maiden.

I thought I made it clear with 'interacting with a third party." I don't care what they are saying if they aren't talking to others.
Tee hee am I that obvious? Im a sucker for good manners.
