Is it true that men age better than women?

This is something that I've been thinking about. There is this saying that men age like fine wine, whereas women age like milk. Judging from my own experience, there seems to be some truths to this saying. What are your opinions on this?

It's true. Men tend to age better than women 24
It's not true. There is no difference in the way men and women age 21
It's not true. Women tend to age better than men. 4

As someone who worked in a library full of old people not many people of either gender age well.

I think there’s a degree of misogyny behind the “women age worse” retoric, it seems to ignore the beer guts and bald spots many men over 40 start to sport.

I think a woman who ages well is one who looks after herself and a man who ages well is one with good genes who manages to look “classically handsome”.

Exactly. Women rarely go bald, men have more signs of age on their skin as well from what I see. Men age faster if anything but not inside, this is all the appearance not the actual cells although women outlive men by about five years on average as well.

Considering women take care of themselves physically, mentally, and cosmetically, far better than men do, I think it’s really really odd to say that women age “worse” than men.

But the argument that men age better is due to just becoming more established and secure with age.

I think if we got a room full of 50/50 bisexual people and they were to just see photos of older people, they would rate women as more attractive on average than men lmao

If anyone has access to a room full of bisexuals, hit my line - for scientific purposes of course

    • Then the women shouldn't be allowed to wear makeup, because that would be cheating, wouldn't it?

Alternatively men should be encouraged to wear makeup to level the playing field.

Huh? Why would you not want people to be attractive

Nah, I think the whole theory is bullshit. My own mother aged like fine wine. In her mid-60s and hardly any grey (gray?) hair, very slender, awesome skin. My father had white hair and plenty of lines, but still looked fantastic. Oh man, how I miss you two.

It all comes down to good genes, how you care for yourself, and yeah, partly luck.

  • How do people "age" good?

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Men age better because a man is considered in his prime when he is much older, where as women are considered at their prime around 20-23, according to men and women.

Do I think men age better physically? Erm, it depends. If a man looks after himself then I would probably go with yes but I think more women look after themselves than men.

It's not a difference between men and woman. It's a difference in mental attitude and expectations.

Those men and woman who see themselves as worthwhile and who can maintain positive goals in life, with continuous mental improvement and/or learning age better than those who do not.

Men in the culture of the USA have had a historical advantage (now disappearing) in that they could largely consider themselves successful due to the fact that they earned most of the money.

So, my observation, is that if you see some older guys who had decent careers for their working life and managed their money well who now seem to have aged well. The younger generation does not seem to have that much of an advantage now.

Woman in the culture of the USA (and many other countries) have had a historical advantage in that personal conditioning and attention to how well they looked used to be far more important now (my Eastern European Wife is totally amazed at how in the older movies how well woman dressed and looked physically compared to now) has given many older woman a sense of success in that they have been able to maintain themselves looking well.

My observation is that an older lady who has maintained herself well considers that part of her success and ages better than those who have not.

While it is true that a portion of the younger generation has maintained that (without going overboard) - there has been a huge increase in the % of woman who don't have any apparent standards that they really care about compared to the past (or as my wife puts it: "I cannot believe how many woman are OK with being slobs in the US, and it doesn't take much to look better than average". When I talk to these people none of them seem to have a very high self esteem. I don't see then ageing well.

I was once told that estrogen ages a person's body inside and out. Not sure if it's true, but I did notice that people who eat healthy, exercise, and use plenty of sunblock when they go out usually age pretty well regardless of gender.

I think it has more to do with genetics than sex.

For example, pretty much everyone on both sides of my family physically peaks in their 30's or even around 40, male or female. We all look young for our ages, too (which isn't the best for me right now at 25, but I guess I can't complain too much). However, some families look old before their time and physically peak as teenagers.

It also has to do with how well you take care of your body. If you abuse it or don't take care of it, it will not age well.

How one looks in their 'golden years' depends on multiple factors ranging from diet, exercise, even how often they laughed in their life has an effect on wrinkles forming down the line. There are unstoppable variables too that have an effect on how we look such as genetic health issues and birth deformities. Ultimately, women are just as likely as men to age better or worse. It comes down to lifestyle, diet, and genes.

If you want to avoid wrinkles, either die before your thirtieth birthday, or pick parents with the right genes.

More realistically, the most important thing you can do is to keep your exposure to UV light to a minimum, since that causes a lot of damage to the surface layer of the skin over time. Not smoking, not abusing drugs and limiting alcohol consumption also helps.

Sadly not. With time you start to lose collagen and elastin in your skin, meaning gradually you increase your chances of having more. That said, I wouldn't recommend avoiding laughing/smiling as both of these acts are very good for your body.

Yes, they do. It's a fact of life that people don't like to admit, but SMV values clearly indicate that men age better than women. Also, there's a practical reason for it. Men are fertile all their life, women are on a short biological clock. It's around 40/45 that men peak in SMV value, which corresponds well throughout the evolution of our species; as there would have been genuine selection pressure for most of our existence, when you look at those selection pressure a man who is around 40/45 is still capable of producing and defending offspring, but crucially, he should also be in a stable enough position in terms of earnings to support his children by that point in his life. (Ironically, young men actually hold a pretty low SMV value.)

Where as if you're partnering with a woman who is 40/45, and don't already have children with her, then your essentially very likely to fail to reproduce.

People in the modern world are quick to call things sexist that they don't like or understand. When you analyse them in a pragmatic way, and comprehend what the current evidence says in terms of SMV values, and the reasons behind it, it makes rational sense.

Yeah, you've got what I'm saying completely man. Of course individual have difference preferences, but the data points towards a strong, general preference for the opposite sex at different ages, i.e. men peak a lot later than women.

Men and women phyically age the same, BUT a healthy old man can make a baby. A healthy old woman, after she hits menopause, cannot make a baby. So people are biologically more attracted to a healthy older man and more forgiving of his signs of aging than we are a healthy older women.

There's literally no evidence of this so no.

My mum is 65 she looks a lot younger. My father is 58, looks 80. People think my father is my mum's grandfather yet my mum is 7 years older than him.

So no I disagree. In my family all the women look younger and all the men look older.

It's all genetics and how you take care of your body and skin.

I'm a woman. I think it's true. They say men's life starts at 40. And i heard that men get kinkier at that age while women lose the libido for sex. Although not everyone is the same.

I think its more what the opposite sex is attracted to that influences someones decision on looks when it comes to ageing.
I think the majority of men are attracted to physical appearance where as women are not as picky, probably are more attracted to the mans bank account and how much this person can support her like daddy did.
