Is it weird that as a young woman i am appalled by this?

I'm appalled by the fact that many men don't see it as such a big deal if a woman used the men's room because
either the ladies room is closed/broken or there's a long line (and no line at the men's), but if a man were to come into a ladies room, the women inside would possibly freak out and automatically think he's there to perv (or maybe even worse). While there have been men who have done such things, I find it very unfair and judgmental to assume that all or almost all men would only come into the ladies room to do such things. Unless it was obvious that he just wanted to do something perverted (or worse), I wouldn't say a word if a man really needed to use the ladies room while I was already in there. If men let women use the men's room, it's only fair for women to extend the same courtesy to men. I honestly feel sorry for the men who are judged like this for innocently just needing to use a women's restroom.

Also, to the men, If I came into the men's room desperate to go, I would go in, do my business, and leave. I have no reason or intention to look at any guys in there at all and I do think most women are the same.

I see nothing wrong about objecting to the double standard. The issue is actually one (I think) because of the stereotype that men have of being perverts. If that baseless generalization were thrown out the window, I doubt many women would be blatantly hypocritical about this issue.

But isn't it weird though because I'm a WOMAN?

I'm a woman as well. No. Recognizing double standards can happen from any gender. Why would that be an oddity?

I meant, isn't it weird that I'm a woman and I'm appalled by THIS particular double standard (which affects men only)?

Why? You're allowed to think something is wrong/unfair even if it applies to a group you don't belong to.

Surely there are a lot more important double standards than this one to be appalled about? I think it's weird you're so upset about it

ok. :) Though, I wonder how a guy would react if he read the OP and found out it was written by a female...

Gender neutral bathrooms are the way to go.

I totally agree. This way women would be forced to be in the same bathroom as men and see that the (IMO) ridiculous stereotype that MOST men that are in the same bathroom as a woman will rape them or is a perv is just that - a stereotype.

Just wondering, are you a guy or a girl?

To play devil's advocate, I don't think anyone's saying that "most" men would do that... although I agree that the fear some would is a big reason why we as a society haven't taken that step yet, which is a tough argument to get around because I also believe people have a right to feel save and secure regardless of whether I think it's rational or not. For me, the safety argument breaks down when we remember that bi/gay men and lesbian/bi women can harass, rape and assault too; single sex spaces are not necessarily safe spaces.

I'm won over by the argument that "gender differences" are thin veils. The mere existance of single gender or single sex spaces reinforces the idea that the sex/gender divide is somehow concrete (spoiler: gender and sex are social constructs). What better way to break down the sex/gender wall than by letting all people shit and piss in the same place?

        I'm non-binary. I am a feminist though.

This would be less of a problem if public bathrooms were made to be unisex.

Anyway, all of what you've described with magnified for trans people. Some have been attacked and killed for trying to go into their preferred gender's bathroom.

Women are not used to seeing a man in there, it's very rare a man would do this. Because it's an unusual occurrence coupled with men being able to overpower women, and the fact that there may be hardly anyone else there in this confined space....a woman would normally feel threatened by seeing a man walk in. There is very little reason for him to be in there, most men wouldn't dare and would go to another cafe/pub etc to find a toilet. Women have been raped before in public toilets...that's a lot less likely to happen to a man.

I would never go into a ladies room unless I was desperate and it was the kind that was designed for one person at a time and it had a lock on the door. If a woman came into the men's room while I was using it I wouldn't get excited, although I would think it odd. First I would do a double take to be sure that I was in the right bathroom. I've used men's rooms in Europe that had female attendants wandering around while I did my business. It's really no big deal for a girl to be in the men's room if she feels the need, but I don't think men belong in the ladies room. Women are more vulnerable and need to be protected!

If I'm dying for a shit I'll use the women's since their toilets are cleaner to sit on.

I am not aware that men are Ok with women walking into a men's bathroom. I have never seen a woman walk into a men's bathroom, and I have never heard a man say this is acceptable behavior. I don't know if this is a regional thing, but I have no idea what you're talking about.

Although most men would definitely not do this, there would be the danger that this could lead to a rapist going into the women's bathroom. You could always solve this issue by just having unisex one stall bathrooms, but at the same time, that wouldn't be good either because then people would have to wait a long time to use it

the issue here is that most women generally are not physically stronger than most men, so there's less of a chance that a woman will overpower a man and assault him. however when a woman is alone with a man she doesn't know, that danger is always present.
