Is it wrong to keep a dog from an abusive owner

I've had a foster dog for over five months, when I first got her she was very underweight, skittish, and smelled awful. It was clear from what we saw and what the original owner told us that she had been locked up most of the day, had been for months, she was unfed, and obviously abused. Over the months she has become part of the family and has reached a health weight as well as stopped flinching. The abusive owner now wants the dog back, and has already pulled out the old and tiny kennel caked in dog shit and piss for her to go back in...
I am not returning her to an abusive home. Is that fucked up?

Normal, but they can still take you to court if they see fit, so it's in your best interest to document everything you can. Try to get a picture of the kennel/poor living conditions, dig up any photos you can of the dog when it was underweight & see if you can get a letter from your vet that corroborates your claims that the dog was underweight & in poor health. That should help should they go that route.

Otherwise, yes kidnap the shit out of that dog.

    • The only proof she ever had the dog is in my mother and her's messages. She never took the dog to a vet and she's a mutt so no papers. We have not taken the dog to the vet as we had been on the fence about whether we were gonna let the dog go back or not. The woman was supposed to be buying a place and then taking him back but she still has no place.
We will be taking her to the vet soon though, gonna get her fixed, all her shots, and get a general checkup!
We do have photos from when we first got her showing how much her bones stuck out.

You guys are good people for taking care of this animal & rehabbing an abused animal that's not socialized is HARD work!

You said these people are "ghetto," af which means they probably won't go the legal avenue, but in case they do any documentation is better than nothing. Your pics, any phone/text records of these people threatening you, evidence if you report them to ASPCA, even proof that they have not vaccinated (neglectful)- all of this would help immensely.

        • She has finally stopped flinching and gotten to a healthy weight. No animal deserves to be treated like that.
          Thank you for the tip!

    • Thinking about the dog when we first got her is so upsetting, I have never seen a dog so scared and thin before in person. She really has gotten so much healthier these last few months and has been recieving the attention she deserves, I just can't stand the idea of even considering giving her back to those horrible people.

We are just worried because my sibling attends school with the abuser and the abuser is very ghetto and may try to fight my sister.

See I would tell him he can have her back just as soon as he puts a 12 gauge in his head. If he lives it's fate and can have the dog ba k if not well..

I dont care about the animal just the peice of shit human. If that animal dies in his care and you can prove it, boom they got a fine and maybe jail time. Problem solved. Animals are kinda all the same they have thier little differences but they are ultimately just more replaceable friends.

Only if it's some fucked up level starving to death kind. If my dog eats the coach it can expect a wack on the head.

That’s such a nice thing for you to want her away from them, don’t see that as wrong, she deserves you and your family.
Hearing how you cared for her and were able to help her recover makes it really understandable that you wouldn’t want her hurt again.
I hope she can stay with you.

  • She is posting vulgar stuff all over social media, it's super trashy.
She is legally an adult though so if she rolls through trying to start shit my mother is ready to fight the bitch
