Some people bite their nails, others smoke cigarettes. There are many ways to occupy ones hands, yet I often do it with clay. Is that normal for a young adult (19)? It seems too childish for someone my age, but there is something soothing about the feel of molding clay between my hands, and mixing colors. Are there other people who also like to play with clay?
That's fine, even if you never try to be a sculptor. For the last several years, coloring books have been really popular with adults.
It's normal and fun, and definitely better than biting nails or smoking cigarettes. XD
Totally normal no matter what age you are! It's even used in healing and is a great relief of stress. It's very artistic and soothing! Keep it up! :)
You ever model anything with that clay? If you get good you could be a movie prop designer someday
There's nothing childish about playing with clay. Why! Some times playing with clay can very "adult-like" due to its sensuality...
Shuggy... There's more to pottery than just making clay penises. You have to spread your legs, put a towel on your lap and make sure that not only are your hands lubricated but the clay edifice as well.... Then, you have to put firm energy into your hands and push, then mold...
It's called being creative! There is a sense of power to be able to take a raw material (such as clay or a pencil and paper) and CREATE something.
Even if you are not being creative, as other have said, stress reduction takes many forms. Some people pet cats, some people run, some collect stamps, some play video games.
The only thing childish about it is the people who make you think that it's "inappropriate" for someone older to work with it!
Have fun and if anyone gives you grief for you doing something like this that you enjoy, send them to me and I'll give them a good hard knobbling about the head and shoulders with my hiking staff :)
That's what it's for. Of course it's normal. And it looks cooler than thumb sucking.
