Jealousy is a sign that someone is insecure and has low self-esteem. It occurs when someone's self-image is so fragile that the thought of the object of their affections rejecting them and choosing to be with someone else provokes strong feelings of fear, anger or even rage.
It's not uncommon for teens to have serious jealousy issues since people of that age are trying to figure out who they are and they often question if they have any value at all as a person. Mature adults who are jealous often have unresolved issues with feelings of rejection in their childhood.
Someone who is emotionally mature and certain of their value as a human being will not feel threatened if someone they care about looks at, talks to or spends time with another person whom they consider to be a potential competitor.
I think to have a complete lack of jealousy would not be normal, but I also think it's not normal to be insanely jealous.
