Is my mom going to die!?

On sunday morning my mother woke up and found a bat in her room. It was flying near the ceiling.
My little sister (5 years old) was sleeping with her so she quickly ran out with my sister. She says she has some scratches on her back but she is not sure if its the bat or not.
She doesn't work and my father refuses to send money for her to go to the hospital or something!
I am not asking if she is going to die from the scratches but I am asking if she's gonna die from some disease like Rabies!

Its been a week now she seems fine but I am still worried!
She only told me this today I am worried sick. PLEASE be serious when you post a comment.

she is going to die 8
she is not going to die 27
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Both your mother and sister need to see a doctor immediately. End of story.

It's incredibly unlikely she contracted rabies. The bat would've had to have been: A)In the final stages of the disease B)Broken skin -AND- C)Salivated onto your mother's open wounds. You should be more concerned with her getting sick from something else that the bat could have given her. Illness is quite a possibility, death is very unlikely. Either way, definitely have her go to the ER if she gets a fever, diarrhea, or pukes- should could have contracted something else. I have to stress this though- You can only contract rabies via the animal's saliva, blood, or brain tissue.

She can go to an emergency room and get treated (at least in the US they cant be turned down because they cant pay)...why take the risk? Rabies is no joke. Im pretty sure if shes not showing any symptoms she can be successfully treated with a vaccine. I would absolutely insist that she go to the hospital.
Tell your father, shots are cheaper than a funeral :/

It's not rabies. If it were rabies you would already know. But she still could get an infection and die from that. If you really can't afford to see a doctor, the best thing you can do is pour some anti-bacterial stuff, (alcohol or hydrogen peroxide), on it and bandage it up.

    • Please stop speaking of serious matters of which you know nothing.

In actuality, it could take months before her exact affliction becomes apparent.

She is fine. A tetanus shot might be a good idea. They're cheap.

Post-exposure prophylaxis should be considered when direct contact between a human and a bat has occurred, unless the exposed person can be certain a bite, scratch, or mucous membrane exposure did not occur.

You can probably relax, but I really don't know.
Keep an eye on those scratches and look out for obvious signs of infection. And if she starts feeling unwell, it's hospital time. I don't know where you live but here they're free.

    • You clearly know nothing about rabies. By the time she starts feeling noticeably "unwell," it's already too late.

She is going to die. The pressure is all on you as to whether or not she dies now or later. I think it would be wise to take her to a hospital just to be 100% sure everything is okie dokie.
