Is my professor being ridiculous?

So I had an assignment in english where I had to watch a documentary on flat earthers. And so for my first assignment we had to right a paragraph of our reactions.

I wrote what I thought including referring to flat earthers as "morons" and "living in a fantasy land" and a few derogatory things like that. He graded my summary and wrote that

"You met all the requirements for this assignment but your hate towards flat earthers is uncalled for. You act like they are totally wrong when its really just a different viewpoint that you need to respect even if you don't agree with, so I gave you an 8 instead of 10"

Is it normal to be super fucking pissed at this and how petty it is? Or does my professor have a point?

Trouble is insulting people isn't a valid way to get on in the world. It might get you on in the playground or in the pub but it won't get you on in a professional arena. I believe the purpose of education is to further your intellectual prowess and chances of success in civilization. This is probably where he's coming from. Additionally, picking and choosing which opposing views you think are valid and those which are open to ridicule is entirely subjective upon your own life experiences. some people think the earth is flat, some people think climate change is a hoax. Some people think religion is ok, others think it's the most ridiculous and damaging thing going. One thing is for certain tho, you will never convince anybody to change their views by insulting them.

      1. I'm not tryna change anybodies mind. The chance that a flat earther ever reads my summary is basically 0.

      2. I wasn't insulting poeple for fun, the assignment said "summarize your reaction" so I literally just did what it said.

Your professor is just trying to prove a point that you shouldn't be demeaning regardless of how ridiculous someone's opinion or point is.

They think the earth is fucking flat! How much dumber does someone have to be to warrant referring to them as a moron?

He's wrong, you don't have to respect opinions like that. People who think there may be a god or that we live in computer simulation, fair enough. But not people who refuse to live in reality, it would be bad for them to take them seriously.

To be fair, if we're living in a computer simulation, then the world might be flat.

It's called "Behind the curve" and I would STRONGLY recommend NOT watching it. Its horse manure about how its important to challange ideas and they might be right and all this. Fucking stupidest assignment ever.

College is more of a time and place to be extremely professional especially when it comes to writing. It is funner to write the way you wrote, but in the end professional writing wins.

eyyup... well first of all the title of the documentary is "Behind The Curve" That should be your first clue that the makers of the film knew who they were dealing with and so did the professor. Now reading the comments and especially between the OP and FromTheSouthWeirdMan, it is clear that the OP is never going to get it. He is not going to be able to grasp the point of the lesson that the professor was trying to get across. I say it was lucky that he even gave you 8.

One of my English teachers gave us an assignment once. True or false... "All writing is garbage" I got it wrong. If you pick through someones garbage you can learn an awful lot.

I see where he's coming from. He wanted you to keep it professional. Insulting those that you disagree on an assignment like that is kind of immature.

Immature to think flat earthers are morons? 95 percent of people think that. It was also not a very professional assignment because he didn't want us to edit it or brainstorm for it or anything he just wanted out but reactions.

No you're missing the point. Its not immature to think flat earthers are morons but it's immature to call them morons on your paper. He wants you to keep it logical and not emotional. He's trying to keep kids from becoming snowflakes unlike most professors who encourage that. Good man!

Instead of saying "Flat earthers are morons." You could have said "In my opinion, flat earthers are naive and bias, and the main reason I believe this is because they cherry pick their facts when it's convenient. An example of this is..." and then go to something like "Those are some reasons why flat earthers believe the way they do, but the problem with that is...." Something along those lines would be better because you're sticking to logic and not emotion. Also you're telling people that have never heard of flat earthers why someone would believe in flat earth and then you're telling them why YOU believe theyre wrong.

Joe Rogan is a person that's really good at this. He usually gives both sides of the argument validity and give his own opinion on why he believes what he does and then he will go back and say something like "they do have a point on this topic and this is kind of weird.". He gives you both sides of the argument where normally the media will give you one side of the argument. And people will then be wondering why flat earthers believe the way they do and they won't get that info from your writing. Also flat earthers rhat read your paper will immediately get defensive and not give your argument thought.

Idk I cant really explain it good but thats the best I got. I see where hes coming from.

I mean yeah, for a more formal assignment like the actual paper I'm writing, I will bit be so direct and address more evidence that suggests the earth is round or whatever. It's just that when he told us to write our reactions, I didn't feel like that meant I should be providing a bunch if evidence as to why the earth isn't flat.

Joe Rogan is great and he does represent both sides. Representing both sides is usually a good thing to do, but sorry, but with flat earthers. They are too fucking dumb to get that attention.

Your professor is the moron. People have the right to believe what they want but we have a right and a duty to mock those beliefs when they are factually incorrect and harmful. Tolerating ignorance is a slippery slope. You tend to find flat earthers are also anti-vaxxers, right wing conspiracists, and hold a host of other ignorant and harmful beliefs. Even if their only looney belief is a flat earth, they are a danger and deserve 100% of your disgust and mockery.

It's interesting that you believe that you have a "right and duty to MOCK people" for being ignorant or factually incorrect and that they are dangerous and deserve your "disgust and mockery". I shudder to think that this is the method you have taught your three children to use when out and about in the world.

I have taught them. Harmful beliefs are disrespectful to society. Such disrespect is NOT worthy of our respect. The fragile right-wing snowflakes deserve mockery and their ignorance deserves to be exposed. It’s very simple.

Mockery rests upon a false opinion and proclaims the imperfection of the mocker. Mockery is not an effective tool for improvement. Mockery is a form of hatred and sadness which can never be converted into joy. (Spinoza). Even if the flat earthers are misinformed, choosing mockery as a weapon really reflects back on you. I don’t expect you to get it though. You have proven yourself to be as misinformed as the flat earthers you mock. No matter how much you argue your point it has become obvious that you will never grasp the lesson of your professor Your 6 foot ladder is never going to get you to the top of a 2 story building.

Mockery is an important tool when used as a form of derision and contempt. Beliefs that are harmful to society demand our contempt. If not, are you saying they demand our acceptance? If so, you are part of the problem and are part of why these false beliefs are growing.
Because certain celebrity anti-vaxxers and flat earthers were derided, they woke up and later came out apologizing for their ignorance.
I am not saying mocking them is the ONLY tool - just that it is a valid one. IF THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES, you don’t accept those that says he does.
