Is my relationship with my teacher normal?

I regularly confide in a teacher but feel our relationship has progressed beyond what is appropriate. We regularly email and they have sent me a friend request on facebook. We have also exchanged mobile phone numbers. This teacher is worried about my mental health, but I was wondering - is it normal to be this close to a teacher?

Hmm.... I see a red flag there, especially because you sound somewhat uncomfortable with the situation. I hope he's just a really kind teacher, but it sounds like he might be taking advantage of you. Making you feel like you have problems and that he is the only one you can lean on is problematic. Telling you you have mental problems? Do you? You should be talking to a professional therapist. He may be crossing some boundaries here.

Yes, it is very normal, it's just not very common. He is a very good teacher. He's concerned for your mental health and obviously your personal well-being because he cares about you... such people are very rare these days; they see plenty of kids a day but they will still do everything they can to help you personally and ensure that you stay on a good path. I really miss having teachers like that. You should be glad to have someone so caring in your life.

Hmmmm depends this one, if your feel a bit creepy about it it's probably NOT normal. It could possibly be grooming, do your parents know? Have you told the teacher you feel uneasy about this?
I was trained to teach adults and I was told NEVER to try and help someone with issues such as mental health single handed and find help that's more appropriate..... If it's just this teacher who isn't interested in involving other adults to help you out then I say NO it isn't normal.

The fact he's become a friend and source of help for you makes it okay in my books. He's a person you can trust, and you value an educated talk.
