Is this dangerous/illegal

My friend bought 1 MAPP gas and 1 Oxygen tank like these.

He wants to tape them together and throw them into a fire in his backyard so that they explode and he is inviting some more of his friends to see the big bang. Will the explosion be very big? will it be dangerous? Can all of us be arrested? I need to know so that if it's too dangerous I can stop him before someone gets hurt. My buddy likes watching explosions.

    A really, really bad idea!

    I usually joke around on this site but I couldn't be more serious when I say this isn't stuff to be played with. Someone can get killed or permanently disfigured.

      I'd also like to mention that government authorities probably won't view your friend's actions as a harmless prank. Actually I'm pretty sure he'd face some jail time, heavy duty fines and expenses.

    You should try to find laws on this. I know that it is illegal to make Bombs, unless you are a professional who works in that industry. I don't think that amateurs are allowed to do this. I also don't think that it is legal to make an explosive in a heavily populated area. This is based from things that I've heard, but I don't know 100%. Do his parents know? What do they think? You say he is obsessed with explosions, this could be the beginning of alarming and dangerous behaviour from him. You should tell someone. If not his parents, tell your parents or even the school's guidance counsellor. In fact telling the school therapist might be better, because you should be able to keep your identity protected. Just make sure this person understands that you really are talking about a friend and not yourself.

    It sounds fun, but hell lot dangerous. You can't just throw it in fire, you need equipment for that. And you can't throw it in your backyard, since you'll be nuking the houses around you, and of course. It includes your house as well.

    Unless you live in an open field, the only thing you need is an equipment to blow it from far away.

    Is your friend insane? The Boston Marathon bombing was done with the burst strength of a pressure cooker and he's thinking of doing this in a backyard? People can get injured by a flying fragment of the thing much further than they can by the shock wave or heat. After all, guns (which are like a little explosion) can shoot things a mile, don't they?

    It will literally be like a bomb going off. A friend of mine threw a household fire extinguisher into a fire and it knocked a 5" wide live tree And a fire extinguisher isn't full of highly flammable gasses. If you guys do this, be sure to comment and update us on how it went.

    This is what you call Arsonny so he is going to be charged as an arsonist. If he destroys any nearby houses it would be damage of private property. If someone dies near, in or around the house it will be murder. So yes its very stupid, very dangerous, illegal, breaking multiple laws, is going to get a lot of jail time if it works or not, and its probobly going to make a huge explosion. Do everyone a favor AND REPORT THIS FUCKING MORON TO THE POLICE RIGHT NOW!!!!! Oh and even if it does not kill anyone its still endangerment so that is a possible charge too.

      The only people who are allowed to do this are fire fighters and this is in a controlled area when they are practicing. Its not legal or normal for someone to randomly attempt to blow up a house.     Knew a guy (we were teens at the time) who died from the shrapnel in a very similar fashion. Do NOT. I would talk to someone....talk to guy and convince him not to. If he doesn't listen...talk to his folks.

    Although I wasn't there...there were like 5 or 6 guys with him...that were lucky to survive. I can't imagine what those guys go through every day having witness a friend pass because they were just being dumb kids.

    Although it might seem logical to expect an explosion, in practice, I'm not sure that's exactly what would happen. I'm obviously not going to explain why you probably won't get an explosion because that's effectively telling you what to change if you did want an explosion.

    However, I can think of at least two effects that are not unlikely and both of them could be fatal to a person or people in the vicinity. I don't know what country you are in, but killing someone by being responsible for something which clearly seems dangerous would generally lead to imprisonment.

    I'd recommend that you friend studies pyrotechnics so that he can do it safely as a job, if he likes blowing stuff up. There's no harm in blowing stuff up. It's just not good to kill people while you're at it.
