Is this normal dog behaviour?

My dog is weird. I've come to accept this over the years. I'm not gonna bother with backstory about her general weirdness, it'd take hours. There's one particular behaviour she has that I'm curious about.

She gets taken to the park daily for exercise, but she doesn't understand how to interact with other dogs, and cries when they try to sniff her bum. So what she wants to do at the park, is have someone throw a ball for another dog, so she can run alongside it as it chases and fetches the ball.

But. She doesn't want anyone related to my grandmother (her owner) to throw the ball. If my gran, me, or any of my cousins go to pick up the ball, she'll run in (knocking us out of the way if necessary) to pick it up herself, take it away to someone else at the park, drop it at their feet and bark for them to throw it. If they don't get the hint, she'll cry. If they still ignore her, she'll headbutt them in the back of the legs until they either throw the ball, or they get pissed off and go home.

I've never seen a dog do this sort of shit. Anyone I tell thinks I'm making it up until they see it.

Has anyone else othe there ever encountered this sort of doggie behaviour? Or is my baby just "special"?

Awwwhhh, what a precious little puppy!

I have never seen those behaviors but I don't spend much time around dogs. I once had a Border Collie but she never learned to play fetch for some reason. She could do tricks, army crawls, she could tell we were speaking of her even if we did not use her name or the word "dog"... but she never learned to play fetch.

Border Collies are so damn smart.

Beefy sometimes responds to her name. That's about the only trick she does :(

It cries....that's one very odd thing.

I've seen lots of female dogs that were nervous about the sniff greeting and they attempted to either cover the area by putting their tail down or, at times, became aggressive.

Growing up, the neighbour's dog also used to run alongside our dogs as they chased the ball but never wanted the ball herself. She was very submissive, despite being a lot bigger.

My last dog had a habit of taking her ball to other people to throw. She was very insistent and her brow would furrow if they didn't get the hint, then she'd start nudging them and alternative between looking at the ball and looking at them until they got the hint.

I'm guessing your dog is acting the way she is partly because of where she feels hierarchically. The rest, who knows? As well as I know dogs, they still have the potential to surprise.

I'm half asleep reading this, so hopefully I'm not messing it all up :-S

She's not submissive so much. She's kinda in charge, which is the source of all her other behavioural problems. I'm interpreting what you said her behaviour would make sense, because she's dominant, so she decides who throws the damn ball or no one does...am I even close? I dunno. My brain is fuzzy.

She also rounds up other dogs that are fighting :) Not successfully, but she puts in a good effort. Then gets blamed by the other dog owners for starting the fight :(

It's not even 1am yet, you lightweight. :P

Yeah, she's probably thinking that she only wants to fetch the ball for someone she could at any time consider dominant. So she only wants that person to throw the ball. How they respond to her is probably judged by her. If they don't react to the chance to be dominant she could feel she has to assert her own personality and push them into it.

Aww, your dog is adorable. But yeah, mine doesn't act the same way as your dog while fetching a ball, but she does get weirded out when other dogs sniff her butt also.

I used to offer to pay people to take her haha :)

You can't return her after she eats a couple of chairs and a citrus tree, though. Be warned.

I don't know much about dogs but 1 time I was playing bball in the park with mates and this random dog showed up with a tennis ball dropping it at our feet lol it was fun throwing it but his owner showed up callin him but he ignored and continued to drop the ball at our feet so I'm guessing other docs have this behaviour

      Heh cute :)

My dog prefers to run between humans kicking a ball, more than even running with other dogs. She frequently takes a football to the head, or gets kicked by the people playing. Doesn't notice.

Nope. She doesn't seem to understand how to. She looks all confused and runs away or cries.

We do joke that she has doggie autism. I just didn't say it cos I didn't want people to be offended and think I was making fun of it.

The dog acts like that because you and her owner allow it! Kick her ass a few times and she'll straighten up and act normal!

And it's a shame that you're so stupid that you don't know how to train a fucking dog! People who don't know how to train a dog has no business owning one.

        • And someone like you has no business talking about dogs in general, especially about how to train them.

Anyone else on this site I would be trolling, but you really are a piece of shit.

You're saying the dog is untrained because she won't play a silly game 'correctly'?

          Seriously?

          Move along, dickhead.
