Is trick or treating harmless, dangerous or other?

Trick or treating is a very controversial thing to do, but I'd like to hear some opinions - do you feel it's harmless for kids to go to random houses and ask for candy or if it's more of a form of begging with the threat to vandalize?

It's completely harmless - children love it! 40
No, trick or treating is like begging. 8
It's just a cheap gimmick so shops can sell sweets easier. 12
No, it's dangerous - stranger danger! 5
It's safe if children go with parents and only to a few houses. 18
No, trick or treating inspires children to vandalize. 6
It's full of problems, but kids love it, so why not? 20

It's harmless as long as the younger children are supervised. It is also good if the candy is checked for any openings or holes before it is eaten.

Someone guy who'd just moved to this country and was first of all surprised and later angered by the stream of children knocking on his door, threw a pan of boiling water at me when I was the unlucky millionth customer.

So, yeah, it can be dangerous. None of the water hit me, by the way.

i love how all through out life parents tell their kids "don't take candy from strangers" and then halloween rolls around & all that stranger danger bs goes out the window. TRICK OR TREAT!

Where I live, kids use it as an excuse to vandalize. Tiny cute kids that could get molested don't really go trick or treating here

Trick or treating is fine. As long as parents or older siblings accompany young kids, and they check the candy before letting the kids eat it, it should be okay.

  • Tough question.

Trick or treating's status as a safe activity is up and down. If the child is occupied by parents, yes, it's completely safe, but remember, there are some children that DON'T get occupied, then realise they can do whatever they want for the whole night.

Four to six years ago for example there was a news report on Sky News that an oldy had been rushed to hospital because two children in glow-in-the-dark skeleton masks had jumped out on her and she had had a heart attack.

Plus, yes, I do agree that trick or treating is a gimmick to sell confectionary and make a crapload of money too. But one thing's for sure, trick or treating is not completely harmless: especially stranger danger when unsupervised.

I think that as long as the kids stick in a group, and don't eat the sweets straight away in case their poisoned, then it's all good fun! Humanity showing kindness through giving kids sweets, or something like that!

every reported candy "poisoning" was a direct result to the childs own parents useing halloween candy as an opportunity to poison their own kids
