Is video game addiction?

I love (no adore) playing vidya games, but it’s been a major impediment in my life. I always have this clawing craving to play them, and often give in. I understand that this is my fault, and not the fault of the games, but is video addiction a thing and how can I kick it?

When in university I failed classes by skipping exams to play, skipped parties to play, didn’t date much because I was playing... now I’m done school and I’m filled with regret. I still play them sometimes but am actively trying to resist the urge, instead spending my time with friends, meeting people, reading, and going to the gym... but I’ve tried to quit before and always failed.

Any advice? I feel like a total loser having to discuss this.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

All addiction is, is continued use or behavior despite negative consequences. You can be addicted to anything.

I mean, that makes sense to a degree but there is a compulsion, a drive or motivation to do the thing despite the negative consequences.

Learn how to moderate your time better. Set a timer or something so that you can be more disciplined.

I did this thanks, not the timer, but just better time moderation.

The fact you said 'vidya games' instead of 'video games' means you're probably a troll.

Not trolling, it’s how Hank Hill says it, and I find it funny. It’s fine if you don’t agree but don’t be disingenuous and accuse me of trolling.

If you like games so much, make money through playing video games. Be a game tester, or a youtuber, streamer, whatever.
You can make money by playing video games if you're funny.

Those are good ideas but I think testing would take the fun out of it (could be a good way of quitting though).

I agree, those are excellent ways to make money, but the competition is also super high.
