Is your workplace pet friendly?

My boss recently started bringing his dog to work. His name is Edgar. (The dog, not my boss.) It's been great fun but now Edgar isn't allowed to come play at the office. My boss is currently splitting up with his wife and the whole reason Edgar joined the staff was because they shared custody of the dog.

Edgar is a sweet and snorty older pug and has a few health issues. He is also the skinniest pug you would ever meet. You can see his rib bones and not his pug wrinkles. The ex doesn't believe he is being treated well and gets angry that we feed him treats. His favoite snack is blueberries. (Only healthy treats.) One day he got sick in the office and now the ex is being a bitch and won't let Edgar hang out with us anymore.

The staff misses having a dog around so a few of my co-workers have started bringing their dogs in to keep the place interesting. It's a lot of fun and it helps keep us in a good mood when really bad Mondays happen.

So I was wondering if it is normal to have a pet friendly workplace?

I wouldn't take my dog at my work place as it's a hospital :-P Besides he'd (my dog would) feel I.am neglecting him.. but I love what you're doing..

Two cats at work. One sits on my laptop if I dont pet him when I come in. Every boss should allow certain pets or pet at work. It works as a de-stresser.

No. I don't think the lab animals will like a strange animal hanging around and vice versa. Plus it's probably a quarantine issue.
I'd love to work in a pet friendly place, but you have to be considerate of others too, some people have allergies.

Alas no. We do have animals in the labs but they are really not pets. I don't think my working environment is safe for animals (either pets or the animals we use for testing).

I wished we could have pets at my job, but considering the older clientele I serve, I would suspect allergy issues prevent me from bring in my cat :(

I would love to bring my cat to work. But I don't think my cat would like it very much.

You don't say what sort of business this is, but I knew a chiropractor's office that got shut down by the health department for having a dog in the office. I also knew an apartment manager who got fired for bringing her dog to the office after someone called the owner of the building and complained. Offices are places where people should work, not play with dogs. Unless your "boss" owns the company, he's lucky someone hasn't reported him for having such a distraction in the office. Also, if one of those dogs bites someone, even if it's another employee, both the owner of the dog and the company could be sued for having the dog in the office.

I don't see why this comment was ever disliked, Moonbow makes a clear point. While its all fun and games, you do get paid for a reason (not to play with your dog/cat) If someone got hurt because of the animal (allergies/bit/scratched) It is the buisness on the line and the whole company would be shut down (and depending on the accident your dog might be killed). Its a risk. A risk bosses should know better then to take.

However, lets say you run a pet store.... you can expect to see cats or dogs in there. A dog/cat/bird in a pet store is a fine location. customers expect such things. The pet should be well trained and supravised at all times tho because if anything is to happen to the dog or your customers because of the dog, thats on your ass.
