You know, I really like how people go preaching this altruistic nonsense (🙄), like kindness, caring for others, and blah blah blah. To begin with, no one is genuinely kind because they want to be, and no one genuinely cares about others. Now, none of this is necessarily a bad thing. It's perfectly fine. However, giving these stupid lectures is extremely hypocritical because not a single person truly cares about what's "good". Altruism is non-existent. Nobody does "altruistic" things because they genuinely want to or whatever. People just enjoy playing pretend and listening to themselves speak.

    Being kind towards others is the only way to make a positive, lasting effect on humanity, albeit small. Even through evolution, we're programmed to care about others. When you help others, your brain releases hormones that make you happy. You could argue that, because you get happy hormones, that it isn't "true" altruism, but nobody cares about that in the long run. It's about helping others to improve your world.

      How is helping others going to improve "your world"? It only improves the other person's world, not yours, and in that case, you're just serving someone else. Not really beneficial. But that's loads of bull anyways. Nobody genuinely gives a shit about helping others. Also, bullshit. People are not programmed to care about others.

        true I genuinely believe that human beings are sadistic by nature. They all partake in Schadenfreude at whoever they deem as "bad", "cringe", or whatever. To the universe, there's no such thing as good and bad or moral. Tbh I lost my faith in humanity a long time ago.

    It's a catch-22. If you're a really kind person and you show it publicly, guys like this will accuse you of doing it for fame or favors or taxes. If you're a kind person but you only show it privately or anonymously, people think you don't exist.

    There's a lot more altruistic people than we actually know about, they just aren't announcing it on social media, writing books, or giving speeches to crowds about how cool they are. The loudest, not the quietest, are the ones who make history and headlines.

    Not that any of that matters. What "lectures" are you even talking about? Why are you coming up with excuses not to be altruistic?

        You don't have to, huh? Then what's this thread about? Some guy on a soapbox being disingenuous about morality doesn't affect you. If he says "volunteer your time", you might think he's just saying that to make himself sound cool, but the decision of whether or not to do volunteer work still lies with you. You can be altruistic without anyone telling you to do it, so why aren't you doing it?

        You argued in another post that helping other people doesn't improve your world. Do you live in the forest? Helping people is a domino effect. You improve someone else's day, they make different decisions, likely improving someone else's day, and so forth. Keeping people off the streets also keeps them from committing crimes in your area. Improving the state of living in another part of the world improves trade and relations with that part of the world, improving wealth and security in your area. Helping a random dude in need creates a new friend for you, and the benefits of having people on your side can't be understated.

          If you actually read my post, then you'd know the answer to that. What a joke. If I decide not to do it, it's because I have decided that I am just not going to. If I view it as pointless, why would I waste my time? It especially is pointless if it has no impact on me.

          Jesus christ. Sure, go be someone else's servant just so everyone else can be pleased but you. Simply go and cater to everyone else. It makes no difference if someone commits a crime in your neighborhood as long as you are not one of their victims. However, this benefits YOU. In that case, "improving someone else's world improves yours." Thank you so much for demonstrating my point. You're only assisting the man so that you can "have someone on your side." But no one is truly "on your side." You're completely on your own.

            You know there's such things as property values, personal safety, the ability to settle down and raise a family? These are things that are affected if the crime rate in your area goes up. You're on the grid, dude, everything affects you. Everything.

              Most of the time, doing "altruistic" things only has an impact on someone else, which has no impact on you. Only in some cases does doing "altruistic" things have an impact on you. Take that same advice, and don't be so dense.

        If you believe this to be true, it will be. I can't argue with that. If you think the kind gesture of holding a door when your arms are full isn't true, that's your problem and it will persist to be a problem that makes you cranky. If you always think that literally everyone is out to hurt you, you will never see anything true. Some people do genuinely like to help. It is true for them. It doesn't have to be true for you for it to be true for others.

          There is not a single person that genuinely cares for others. they just pretend like they do. I am afraid it is not true for anyone. Some people do it because they want something from the person, while others do it because they feel like it is an obligation. Either way, it's the same.             If I contradicted every person who said something about God (or the notion of his presence or absence) that I didn't agree with, I'd spend all my time online having fruitless arguments that made God neither more nor less real, irrespective of who actually 'won' the arguments.     Altruism does exist, it's just exceptionally rare. Very few people throughout history can be considered genuinely altruistic. Most are actually the opposite of that.

    There are studies that showcase that being *too* kind is often the result of an underlying health issue. Similar to narcissism.

      Everyone's parents can be called altruistic they aren't doing nice stuff to get something out of it they are doing nice stuff because they genuinely love you. So considering everyone has parents altruism cannot be called rare.

            Doing nice stuff does not mean your parents love you. Actually, most people were accidental pregnancies. Most people are not loved by their parents, and neither were people that were planned pregnancies either. People that willingly have babies only do it for status and to have something to brag about, or even to have someone take care of them when they are old and crippled.
