It only takes a second or two more

What possible good reason would someone have to not spell out a 3 letter word like you, using only the letter U? Or the couple of dozen other bastardizations of the English language I see on IIN.
Please vote and comment.

You mean it's not correct to use only a U 2
I don't know why anyone would do it 6
Why write if no one can understand you 3
Only losers are that lazy 6
Really smart people can always find a short cut 10
Learning to write properly is a waste 1
I don't have time to add 2 letters 11
I don't understand the question 5
It makes the writer look really stupid 28
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • I have no idea really. Maybe it is because the people who use text speak are part of the younger generation where it is more accepted? Some people are just plain lazy though.

I don't care about how people spell or type so long as I understand what they're trying to say. I'd be lying if I said that reading chatspeak doesn't give me a sensation that I would only describe as feeling like I'm being poked in the brain with hot knitting needles, though.

The thing I worry about is the fact that once something becomes habitual it spills over into everyday speech and diction...I've heard people verbally say "lol," which is a misnomer since they are saying lol and not actually laughing...I don't envy the job of high school English teachers!

You don't know the half of it.

In high school, we had to write papers in my JRotc course and I saw many chatspeak written papers in the stack. Dead serious. I have seen this in school too many times.

were they being sarcastic with the lol usage? I'd shudder to think it was being used a substitute to actually laughing

It was actually practical back when data rates were excessively expensive. Now, many plans actually have unlimited data but sadly, the "bastardization of the English language," as you so elegantly put it, stuck.

    People are lazy.

Hmm, go make a poll about it youself, I'm pretty sure you'll be proven wrong. I see you are anonymous haha -.- Maybe you don't agree but I do t give a crap, that's my opinion, so go to your English class and teach the students

Personally, I'd use a little less grammar if it weren't for nazi's. I come here on my PS3, so I type using my left analog stick and my x button. It's much easier to use short cuts on this thing.

I do slop my shit when I text, though, because I don't actually want to text. It annoys me. I prefer talking, which apparently nobody else does, so I do it to be annoying. Why have a 5 minute conversation over the course of an hour when you can pick up the fucking phone?

You can hook up a usb keyboard to that thing and it will work no problems.

I think that's one of the real advantages of being ancient; I have actually had telephones that were used for talking. I've never sent a text message and I wouldn't even know how. I did have one phone you could talk into and it created texts, but I never used that feature.
No, call or email, a text just isn't going to reach me.

dnt tl m3 2 spel bich

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Well, if we're talking in term of time used to spell a word, then if we added all of the "two" or "three" seconds to spell a word, then all of those seconds add up, and considering how long the comment is or the speed of someone's typing, then it could take up to a minute or two all added in.

I would think that it isn't much time but others might not.

    But meh.

    • If one can't understand the intended communication, then hasn't the time spent trying to communicate been wasted, so any time saved is pointless, no?
Example; dnt tl m3 2 spel bich

      Comment Hidden ( show )
        -
      • hmmm???

Yeah, I got none of that...

And I completely agree. The time spent trying to decide what was said has taken up the saved time of typing that way.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
      • It depends. If it's still able to be read quickly, unlike your example, then I see no problem with it. Aslong as I don't have to decipher the words, I'm fine by it. People might not have rad typing skills but they make have good advices and/or ideas.

And I think Eccentric's comment was to troll or just plain sarcasm. So don't worry about it.

Because SMS messages and tweets are limited in the number of characters they contain. You could argue that they reflect an inability to spell words out in full, or you could argue that they are responsible for it. Or you could believe both to a degree, which I do.

Never underestimate how malleable human beings are, and don't blame them for the changes that affect them.
