It's "black people" goddammit!

It annoys me when people say "African American" instead of "Black" because not all black people are from Africa. Even if they are, Africa is a BIG place, if they're from Nigeria you should call them Nigerian. It's like calling someone from Brazil a "South American" instead of "Brazilian". It just doesn't sound right to me.

Because race + culture can be very important to some people's identity, you don't want to erase that.

Actually science informs us that we all most likely originated from Africa.
        So I'm African/World :) That's my identity ;)

Well to me it only sounds weird if you have been here for a few generations. Because your not really African american anymore... I meen no one calls me english american or German american... lol

But at the same time if someone prefers one term over the other... you should refure to them by it...out of politeness

I agree, if you don't call a white person "European American" then it makes no sense to call a black person "African American". Most white people in America have never been to Europe and most black people in America have never been to Africa.

Three reasons why I hate the term "African-American".
    1. It's long.
    2. People use it to describe people who aren't even American. I've heard people use the term for Nelson Mandela and the black students at Hogwarts.
    3. It has no counter part. Nobody refers to white people as "European Americans" or American Indians as "American Americans".

They call us Americans and we're actually North Americans if you want to get picky, just like our lesser and kindlier neighbors, the Canadians.
We certainly are not South or Central Americans, but who would know that if you call us Americans instead of North Americans?
Anyway, as you said you certainly cannot tell a person's heritage by looking at them, but unless you are blind as a fucking bat you sure as hell can tell if they are black or white, right?
Fuck political correctness, it's for the lame of mind. Be an adult and call a spade a spade, or a shovel.

I think that "African American" is just the more politically correct term.

Why does it annoy you? Africa is a continent. America is a continent. African-American just says what continent they originated from and now live in and are citizens of. I don't see how this title can be annoying. It is accurate in the vaguest terms.

If a chocolate skin toned American originates from like France? That's a French American. If one is from Germany? Its a German American. Yes, there are black people in Germany that are German citizens. Obviously, race-wise, they didn't originate in Germany, just like there were never white people in Hawaii, or places like the depths of South America. Just having fun with this. :-)

What if a peach American person originates from ancestors born on the African continent?

That's technically an African American, right?

I always think the same thing! What do we do now? Call all peach skinned Americans, um, European Americans? Makes no sense. What if you originated from England? Germany? Austria? Switzerland? Slovenia? Wherever?

I'd say white people are more peachy colored. But if you wanna be pink then by all means I shall call you pink. (:
