Join a religion solely for the purpose of socializing?

Is it common for people to join or change religions mainly for the purpose of social or business advancement? Cults aside!

I wouldn't actually join the religion (my powers of self-delusion aren't nearly that strong) but I've considered going to church in an effort to meet girls. When you live in a small town with no real social venues church is pretty much all there is. There's simply no other way to meet people.

  • i love the socializing that a religion brings, just the other day a catholic friend was telling me about the family groups who have a regular socyial nite once a month, theve been doing it for years.
i was pleased for that but a bit envious too

It depends on the religion. I think having a social circle is usually at least a subconscious motive for joining religion, or at least for staying in the religion you were raised in.

Joining a religion with conscious ulterior motives is probably not that common, but Unitarian churches exist for this sole purpose, so maybe others do, too.

when we were younger me and my sister would like going to church because we would hang out and talk to girls our age. so for us youngsters(too young for jobs, cars..etc) going to church was more to socialize and see our friends, and catch up every sunday on gossip and all that stuff

but if you're an adult already then its not normal. not that its a bad thing either:)

    whatever makes you happy:)

Religions usually have a strong social factor. You can't expect everyone to be a saint. Everyone can't be a leader, too; we all play the sheep sometime. The more the merrier.

If you're trying to socialize more, than you're not a loner.
