Research has found a strong correlation between such beliefs and infection with a particular species of fungus. It has been postulated that the fungus secretes compounds which can cross the blood-brain barrier and affect mental functions, often resulting in delusions of grandeur along with other psychological pathologies.
Researchers aren't clear on the precise mechanism involved, but it appears that young adults living with female older people - such as adult children who live with their mother - are particularly prone to become infected. What the researchers are certain about is that the natural environment of the fungus is concrete or brick walls in close contact with the soil, and the airborne fungal spore count is particularly high in basement rooms.
