Leaving a hot shower running with no one in it. is it normal?

I used to go out with a woman who at the time had a 14 year old son. She'd spoil that kid rotten at times!

Here's an example that used to drive me nuts, and I want to know if it's normal:

She would try and encourage her son (who was usually in his room playing on his computer) to have a hot shower by saying, "Steven, [not his real name] I'll run a shower for you".

So, she'd go to the bathroom, turn the shower on and leave it running for as long as 45 minutes until eventually he MIGHT decide to have a shower (or not).

It seemed so wasteful of electricity and water. I also think she was spoiling the kid rotten, by trying to make him feel like royalty or something.

If he did decide to have a shower he would stand under there for another 30 minutes on top of the 30 mins the hot water had already been running.

It always meant there was usually little or no hot water for anyone else who happened to be staying at the house (I did not live there but would stay weekends). It also meant her utility bills were high.

What I want to know is: Is it Normal to do this?

I've never heard of anyone else "running a hot shower" and it seemed to be her just pandering to the child's every whim.

For all her well intentioned kindness, I saw that as he grew older he treated her more like a doormat much of the time anyway.

It would bother me too. It seems like many kids are spoiled more than they should be these days. Kids need discipline. I was raised much differently.

Why would she need to run a shower for the kid? If he wants a shower he can turn it on with very little effort himself. Like you said, it's wasteful. I hope you at least attempted to explain these things to her.

    • Yeah I never understood it. I sometimes thought she'd seen it on a TV show or movie and got the idea from there. I did ask her once but never got a clear answer.

We're no longer together but it's one of those things that I'd wondered about.

That's totally annoying and totally wasteful. The way you put it it's hard for me to think that you are exagerating at all.
The woman has no respect for herself neither for the environment, I hope she gets to realize it (she seems well intentioned, just way too confused) before she spoils her son to the point that he ends up being a horrible adult.

Not normal at all but she sounds like she would make a great sugar mummy , too bad she's yours . I would see if talking with her may help ? explain that it seems wasteful to do things like that and he's not a toddler ... even if he was it's still wasteful .

    • Thanks for your comment. She's not mine anymore but yeah she treated me well. She was older and more experienced than me so yes she was a little bit like a sugar mummy! ;-)

Well if he is not interested in taking a shower, her attempting to get him to shower would be the exact opposite of pandering to his every whim. But I agree she is going about it the wrong way.
