Life for the sake of life

What do you think about prolonging life, just for the sake of life?
Would you want to be in a home for old folks, living each day in a chair, watching TV, surrounded by others your age? Getting up, eating, taking your medications and going to sleep, all on a schedule imposed by the home? Eating institution food, having little or no privacy and having no say in what you do.
Just sitting around waiting to die, watching others deteriorate around you until they just don't wake up one morning, knowing you too are deteriorating, never to get better again.

I'd rather not say 2
I don't know 3
yes 5
no 20

At that age, if I had nothing else to look forward too, I'd rather head into the woods and see how long I could make it. I'd probably freeze to death on the first night, but it'd beat doing the nursing home thing. Those places are depressing.

It's hard enough being happy when you're young

My friend, Jack, is a retired fireman, 86,and very mobile.
He was taken by his son and daughter to a local facility. The first few days were uncomfortable, because of the meals schedusl and such, but he figured them out by enlistic some help from some of women that lived there. He made dates over coffee to discussc the meals, bsst times for card playing or watching sports. He became the social leader with some very attractive lady always there to support and hold his hand. She is working the romance angle on Jack and he loves it. Jack can't drive any more, but his best friend can, and does. Off to a night out, some beer, flirting with the
ladies, always returning, to the lady who waits by the door.

Why do you make life over 20 sound so boring? I want to be jetskiing on the back of sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!

Look at all the 90+ bodybuilders, gymnasts and track runners out there. There is more to life than tv and jello.

If anyone tries to stuff me in a home I'll go crocodile dundee on their asses.

Why is this all I am doing?
Me and you have different views of old age.
like for one I have family to visit if I even ended up in an old persons home... most of the older people in my family are pretty self sufficient until about 90...then family members help.
also I would be doing a lot more art... think about all that time to just do whatever hobbies I feel like :D.
I meen old people have quite a bit of say in what they do or eat. I worked at a retirement home. The only think is if they had a health problem like diabetes even if they wanted pie or cake...they could have it lol. But we ordered food based on what they liked and requested. And their families sometimes brought food to have lunch or dinner with them. They can participate in the activities or choose not to. We had a nice outside garden area so they could choose to be outside or inside.

    • You have to have money to get into a good one.
Assume your finances take a down turn and life as mentioned above is the only option. Please make your decision off of that scenario.

Well my family would take care of me...that's the thing. Its just in my family all the elderly people end up staying at home and being taken care of.
I would take care of my mother when she needs it and my daughter would take care of me. My moms brother and sisters also have kids that will take care of them. Also we do have money in the family if hard times hit. I can count on my other family members to care for my mother until I am able as well... since we both live in different states.

And lets say that I guess I had not very much money and all my family members died off... I guess. Tho this scenario seems highly unlikely.
elderly homes have to have standards. They would still have a selection of foods maybe not as many... they cant cook you something you dont like and force feed it to you... it would be simple choices such as do I want toast or eggs or cerial for breakfast... all places have to reasonably accommodate food and mealtime preferences...And they would still have to have activities for you to do.... maybe not as many. Most likely people would still bring in pets for the elderly to play with... the place I worked at that seemed to be a favorite. That was free since people volunteered for it and brought in things. Also any place you go they have to have outside time... thats a standard. Therapy no matter who is paying must be an option for every person. ...
Every care home must promote each persons quality of life.

Old people die. It's like their national sport or favorite past time.
Leave them be. At least they get free jello
