Little understood about iq score

i, when tested by a school of the public within my local neighborhoods, scored the limit (130) specifically on the portion of said test titled "speech recognition". ironically, i do not know what implications are made by giving this score. due the nature of such ability "speach recognition" is often perceived as acquired or not, i cannot create my desired opinion. is this score normal?

Without knowing what test it was and seeing the statistics I have no idea. Ask a representative of whatever administrative body issued the tests what the average is, and you can work out to what extent, if any, you deviate from the average.

Regardless, it would just be a number. You should naturally be able to extrapolate how intelligent you are in relation to others, simply by being with and communicating with others.

Remember, IQ test results indicate how good you are compared to everyone else at taking that IQ test. THAT'S ALL. It challenges a narrow range of cognitive functions, but requires nothing from many others that are essential aspects of humanity and human intelligence. It is not a measure of your value in society, despite what some people seem to imply.

For someone with supposed high IQ you misspelt a few words.

well speech not speach, also you don't capitalise your letters, but maybe you're just not arsed to, i know i'm not. that's a really high score, it's not normal to rate that high.

Dappled for once I beg to differ with you. The higher your score the better off you are. Normal-ness leads to being "normal", leading to doing what the "normal" people do. That is not always the best thing ever. i.e. All of the "normal" people want to go get messed up on some drugs. If you are inteligent then more often than not you will avoid that situation. Do you see what I mean? Being a "normal" iq can lead to negative consequences if you are around the wrong people who may be considered normal.

I's surprised you think that 'normal' people take drugs. Not any normal teenagers I know! I wonder what are the actual statistics for people who take 'drugs' as a percentage of the population. Surely, we'd find a lot of these people impoverished and unemployed? That's not considered 'normal' just yet, is it?

I think dappled is just pointing out that extremely intelligent people (nerds) have their own set of problems to face.

Why is no-one every satisfied with the hand they've been dealt? Clever / stupid, fat / thin, beautiful / ugly, etc. It takes all sorts to make a world!

Yeah, I get what you mean. But intelligence only means you understand what the right thing to do is. It doesn't mean you do it. Making instant connections between things that seem unconnected may be defined as genius but it's wearing for the person who is forced into living with it. There's no switching it off.

Imagine having a car that only had one speed and that one speed was 190mph. Driving it would be a nightmare. You'd constantly be on your guard for collisions, you'd be mowing people down with your speed, you'd see too much, too quickly. That's kind of what it's like. It's not like having Google in your brain where you can just instantly look up whatever fact you want. It's like having ten Tasmanian devils in there. It's an effort of will just to keep the bastards from killing each other.

I know most people would give quite a lot for fifty extra IQ points just to see what it's like to consider the world connected in ways they couldn't begin to imagine. I'd give away fifty for free, although I'd miss them at times. It's no coincidence that serial killer IQs are generally on the high side. It drives you insane.

      • dappled, i wish i knew more people like you. and i have that experience. the most intense torture i've had is the inability to communicate with my own family. i've had some very low moments from simply hurting people, because of unintentional arrogance that spews from my lips. people constantly tell me i try too hard. they've no idea how difficult it is to speak in a way that isn't natural to ones self. i repeat, i wish i knew more people like you. i know you are smarter than me. knowing what i do about this pain, suddenly seeing a greater knowledge, do i forget the lessons and envy you? thank you, as well, for allowing me to ask, answer, and explore this question. i have a poll on here about what people live for. interestingly, a large percentage of people give the answer "to learn". so what is our desire? we certainly do not wish much for more knowledge.

i believe that thought is an exercise that is effective when done with consistency. this leads me to believe the same with emotion. and happiness shouldn't be different. but somehow, it is, and this confuses the most of us. i believe that a part of everyone requires inconsistency.

it is a chain of results. the more logical see emotion too irrational to effectively practice it with consistency. however, the logical rarely realize that emotion is vital to satisfy the required inconsistency previously mentioned. some people practice passion as it has been portrayed to them, to escape what negative results come from not knowing the answers.

I wrote you a long reply but it disappeared into the aether because my broadband had cut out just before I clicked the submit button. Kind of ironic on a post about communication problems. I'll see if I can remember what I said.

I spoke about having problems communicating from the age of four and how frustrating it was. I learnt as many words as I could in the hope some of them would be understood by people, but this still isn't the way people communicate. I then stripped down the way I talk to be a version of something I'd already translated once in my head.

People think I type quite primly and maybe a little too precisely here. I do it because I have to. It's the only way I can get things across. I understand how difficult it is to feel isolated because nobody appears to speak the same language as you. I thought they were choosing to misunderstand me as some kind of cruel joke. It made me so angry.

I almost replied to your other post to say my answer would be a cross between making the world a better place and learning everything I could. I still have a thirst to learn that is almost unquenchable, even though I know it gives further potential for linking things that would remain better unlinked. It's not knowing stuff that's the problem. It's connecting the stuff I do know.

Anyway, I'm glad also that I've had the chance to unburden a little about this too. If it's helped you even an iota to know that someone else goes through it, then I'm especially glad. After all, that's what we're here for. Well, most of us, anyway.

          • i understand you quite clearly. that's the thing, though. everything is linked, but it is not likely anybody will ever know "everything". i like to think of it like this; a tree has bark, but if you never learn that a tree has bark, though, that doesn't mean that the tree doesn't have bark. when we look for knowledge to feed ourselves, it's as if we are lost and trying to survive, then suddenly coming across a chest. looking this chest is like looking for knowledge. it maybe empty, but we look because of the chance that it might be full, and we do not want to passing it by only to find out it contained a map. not to mention, we normally don't have any other clues as to where we look next. we do not want to abandon potential, our problem is thinking that great knowledge is recognized instinctively, and so we continue to look for something that awes our minds. but great knowledge is only as impressive as the attention you give it. and the more you know about a magic trick, the less exiting it is.

it's actually very much like a magic show. we spend more time looking for the trick than at the trick. then when you finally discover the trick, it's not a big deal to you.

There isn't a limit to IQ but tests themselves are made with a limit (it's 140 here for standard tests, which aren't really much use to me). The standard test contains 40 questions. If you're getting 39 or 40 right then it's statistically pointless. The ideal test is one in which you get closer to 50% right. Statisticians who understand permutations and combinations will understand what I'm getting at here. A score from 40% to 60% gives a much more accurate result.

Hans Eysenck published a book, which I own, with some tests for people with an IQ above 140. The scale is exponential and there aren't many above 180 so it covers most.

1 in 33 people have an IQ above 130
1 in 160 people have an IQ above 140
1 in 1100 people have an IQ above 150
1 in 11,000 people have an IQ above 160
1 in 160,000 people have an IQ above 170
1 in 3.5 million people have an IQ above 180
1 in 100 million people have an IQ above 190

From your test scores, I'd suggest a more advanced test. I've tested above 180 and a 130 or 140 test would have sold me very short. As a side note, I tested high as an 18 year-old under the influence of caffeine. I'm no longer 18, no longer mess with caffeine, and have destroyed huge swathes of my brain with alcohol. I'm lucky to test over 170 now. And thank God, because I wouldn't have survived how I was.

Take a more advanced test and if it comes out scarily high, work out what you can do to lower it a little. Don't endanger your life or anything like that but the closer to the magic 100, the better. Averageness is happiness. Higher is worse. Much, much worse.

Well I'll just drop by for a second in the middle of dappled's... subtle (?) shoutout to his own test scores, to point out that there are several different tests with several different score systems. Your entire explanation is basically rendered moot if you don't refer to which test, because it might as well have been a fucking online "IQ test". A 170 on one could easily be a 120 on another.

      ...I SCORE 3,006 LOLoLO

Am I cool now? Was I discreet enough?

Yeah, true - it was 1am, I was much less than sober and I broke one of my own cardinal rules and said something I never thought I'd say here. Just amazed I got away without any obvious typos.

To the OP - virtually all of what we consider IQ is thought to be largely genetic. The skills to take the test are acquired but the score you achieve via the test (if you have the ability to understand what is being asked) are not acquired.

130 might be the top for some tests but it's average for most people on others. there are a ton of different Iq tests. one test I took was mainly problem solving skills(puzzles and things) which I did extremly well on. then on another ,that was more acedemic, I'm classed as having mental retardation. I wouldn't put much stock in iq tests. I've met lots of people who would be considered highly intelligent because of their acedemic accomplishments, but then they do stupid shit like wear jeans on a winter camping trip.
