Low iq?

Sometimes I wonder how much people having low IQs has to do with poverty. I understand that growing up in a poor environment will normalize bad decision making. But sometimes it seems the decisions are too stupid to just be culture. Perhaps its literally low IQ at play in a lot of people living in poverty. Maybe they're poor precisely because they make bad decisions and perhaps they make them because of a combination of culture/upbringing and stupidity.

People get paid more based on the Emotional Intelligence (EQ) than there Intellectual Intelligence (IQ).

There are lots of stories of unemployed and broke geniuses who cannot function in the world and lots of stories of people with low IQ who become $Millionaires.

It's their people skills and ability to relate to people that determines how much money they make past any technical skill they may have.

    • I always thought of EQ as being something that low IQ liberals bring up to feel better about their lack of intelligence. But from what I am reading it seems theres a correlation between income and EQ. I dont know how they measure EQ. But I'd assume theres a chance poverty could be correlated with low EQ.

Yes, poverty is correlated with a low EQ.

Many very high IQ people are technical specialist, who cannot function well in teams. When they get downsized from their technical job they often struggle to find work because of their low EQ.

If you are up to it: You can buy several books on EQ and how to improve it.

They used to sell a book with a premium price option that included a EQ test before you read the book, and after you read the book and developed your EQ skills (which takes time and practice).

That book is: "Emotional Intelligence 2.0" by; Travis Bradberry & Jean Greaves.

    • I dont think statistics show high IQ people are "losers". If you look at salaries I dont think high IQ ppl rank low on that scale. I dont know what metric you'd have to use to classify them as losers.

You’re right. The average IQ of impoverished people is 87.

Bad decision making is not actually related to iq so much. Conscientiousness for example was found to have a zero percent correlation with iq.

Unabomber is the ultimate example, sky high iq, impossibly bad decision making.

Definitely irrelevant to intelligence. Not sure if you're aware but many of the most intelligent people alive and deceased came from poverty.

    Marie Curie
    Isaac Newton
    Howard Schultz
    Kenneth Langone
    Alan Gerry
    Graham Steven
    Jim Carrey
    Charles Dickens
    Judit Polgár
    Leonardo da Vinci

    The list could go on

These are all people who are highly intelligent who grew up poor so if anything, half of all people with high intelligence grew up poor. There's literally no correlation.

As for what I've seen with my own friends, I have a friend who skipped 2 grades in school because they're incredibly bright and graduated from Harvard. Their parents came here from Asia with near no money. She lived in a one room apartment with them growing up. She's a neurosurgeon now.

My other friend's parents lived in poverty but both he and his brother also graduated from Harvard. He's a lead software developer at a large company now.

I have another friend who is genius level, had his intelligence tested at a young age because he was so advanced. He came from poverty too. When I would talk to him as a teen his family couldn't afford electricity bills so he often would be without internet for days so they were incredibly poor. He's a vascular surgeon now

    • But this kind of goes along with my point a bit because they are intelligent and they were no longer poor. They made good decisions. I'm not saying this is always how it goes.

Some people break the cycle whilst others seem to feel like they need to accept poverty and that's just how life is without realizing they can achieve beyond that.

Poor = bad decisions = stupidity

    Got it.

    • Staying poor in a first world country is basically a bad decision in itself. Not getting a profession that pays well is a bad decision. I'm just wondering if the reason for these bad decisions is related to intelligence.

Well IQ tests done on children from all different areas show that there isn't really any correlation between IQ and locale. Maybe there would be a correlation with IQ and locale if they had done those tests on adults. But that would only show that it was their upbringing and education made the difference, rather than genetics.

Plus there was a big experiment done back in the 1920s, where they gave a load of kids IQ tests, and then looked at how successful they were when they were older, and they found that the kids with high IQs were only slightly more successful than those with the low IQs. In fact, it's since been shown that the biggest factor in a person's success, bigger even than IQ or motivation, is how rich/successful their parents are, which is disheartening.

Yeah it is with a lot of people. Look at a map of world IQs and world poverty. It's not a 100% correlation, but there's definitely a strong correlation to be found.

    • I just looked and I also saw a racial correlation. Seems that even poor asian countries have decently high IQs.
