Masks have made my accent stronger

I have a customer service job and as people can’t lip read through my mask I not only speak louder but force myself to enunciate and this has had the side effect of my accent becoming stronger. I force myself to purposefully make the shape of each vowel and to hit the first consonant hard so people can understand me, and it works, but I’ve definitely noticed a change in my voice even outside of work. I should note I don’t have a foreign accent, but a more extreme version of the regional one a lot of people in my town have.

Only one person has commented on the change, they assured me it doesn’t matter and that nobody really cares about other peoples’ voices much. Regardless I wonder has anyone else noticed their accent strengthening? Or just a change in how you enunciate words? Does it make you irrationally self conscious?

I’m also in customer service and not being able to read lips makes it so hard!

    • Especially when people mumble. Have you noticed your voice change at all?

I’m naturally pretty loud. And I actually speak in several different ways. I just adapt to the people I’m taking care of.
