Melbourne / sydney rivalry

Learned something from Aussies while asking about my upcoming trip to Australia. I will be in the Northern Territiory no where near either. But I'm still very intrigued that those cities have a rivalry. What is it about? How did it start? I love learning new things.

My gf is from syd but lived in melb for years and prefers melb by far.

As for a rivalry, I don't think it is any more serious than ny vs Chicago pizza bragging rights.

Nah, we have no pizza style. Except my style. It's quite good. Except I can use 20$ worth of ingredients on a single pizza. So it would be hard for me to turn a profit.

My understanding it started from the very beginning just after the colonies federated into the Commonwealth of Australia. It started with where should the National Capital be. They had to compromise and decided to create the ACT because these two cities were bickering that they should be the Capital.

I would suspect it was the same with the United States and their capital.

New Zealand (where I am from) had a similar issue but it was more of a geographic and even a threat to secede from the country. So they moved the capital from the North to the centre of New Zealand to please the Southern provinces.

PS: There's a lot of joking about the weather, that it's always raining in Melbourne to which we Victorians respond that it actually rains more in Sydney over the year.

That's just a bit of fun, I don't know anyone who takes it seriously.

Now hating Canberra ... that's universal and also teasing South Australians about their serial killers and their supposedly boring capital city Adelaide ....

The fact that a city is on Australian territory makes it shitty by default.

Everybody hates Canberra because it is funded by Federal taxes. But, it is a planned city; the design was chosen in an architectural competition. Traffic, shops, etc are all more convenient than most cities. I lived in Canberra long ago - the whole country seemed like paradise.

Sydney is a smoghole full of crime, racism, sexism, homophobia, and many more -isms. It also has a horrible climate that you can't enjoy unless you're completely naked and love horrible climates. As well as having an ugly coathanger looking stupid bridge and fucked up looking opera house thing.

Melbourne, on the other hand. Is a sophisticated, organised and clean city. Full of intelligent people, nice people, and a better climate.

Well they both just compete to be the premier city in Australia.

Sydney and Melbourne are very different places with very different people and climates.

If you visit both cities you'll see what I mean. I like Sydney, but Melbourne doesn't do it for me because of its crappy climate, criminal undercurrents and the strange people.

Darwin, Queensland, Adelaide, Flinders Ranges / Gammon Ranges and Alice Springs are great to visit if you go at the right time.
