It was actually (purportedly) a 59% decrease from 1973 to 2011. It's, again purportedly, due to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, particularly phthalates.
Phthalates are used to soften and increase the flexibility of plastics. It's used in much of the tubing that processed foods pass through and this is often believed to be the issue. The claim is that endocrine-disrupting chemicals trick the body into thinking it has more testosterone than it does and it therefore stops producing it adequately.
That said, others have suggested that it's entirely possible that the earlier counts were simply less accurate due to inferior technology.
Hotter weather and pollutants, probably. Is it actually affecting the birthrate though? Doesn't seem like it.
Its diet related. Get away from all the processed foods and chemicals; back to a basic home cooked food diet (without all the shortcut products) and the sperm counts go back up.
Does anyone really think all those chemicals they add to all those products are actually healthy for you?...
I know that testosterone has been dropping too. Maybe they're connected?
