More military vehicles on the railroads

I commented a few days ago that I saw a lot of tanks being moved on the railroads. Those were camo painted tanks. Today I saw in the same general area they had a lot of other military vehicles stopped on a railroad I saw it twice they were on an overpass railroad over the interstate. These were all tan military vehicles and they had been sitting there for atleast 3 hours because I passed by twice. I wonder if these are vehicles being brought home from Afghanistan

The USA did not have many Tanks in Afghanistan (and perhaps had none).

The most likely explanation for what you are seeing is that every several years EVERY tank Division in the USA has to go through 3 months of training in California (Tank Warfare School). The Tank Division loads up all their tanks and vehicles on trains (and must take everything - even if broken down), all spare parts, etc... and trains take them to the training facility.

The Troops fly there, and are reunited with their equipment. They get to offload the trains, and then deploy everything in field conditions, fix things in field conditions, and live in field conditions (i.e., Tents that they errected) for the duration of the training. Then they load everything back up onto trains and head to their home base.

During the 1st Gulf War the few cases of actual combat by the US Tank Divisions with Iraq heavy artillery or tanks, the US Tank Commanders all said that the actual war conditions and fights were easier than Tank School. That's the way it should be.

My guess is that you were seeing a Tank Division's equipment either headed to or back from Tank School.

  • I wouldnt be surprised if someone tries to steal one of the M2 machine guns mounted on the vehicles. It did not look like anyone was guarding it and they're sitting in the worst part of town.

Train hopping on its own carries a hefty penalty on its own. If military supplies were on board, I would imagine even regular train hoppers (The homeless) would avoid that particular train.
