there are so many factors, but for the sake of brevity melody's most important. How much I like the song after that is then determined by its lyrics, beat, mood, vocals, nostalgia, guitar solo, riffs, or even some bizarre factors like if it's fun to sing along to.
Memorable melody (usually either gloomy/dark or very happy/exciting) and a good beat, good lyrics a plus but not necessary if the other parts are fulfilled
I don't know the determining factor that makes me like a song, but I do know that if the singer has a whiney voice or just happens to be Taylor Swift, Im not gonna like it one bit.
I need a good story with good music. The singer don't have to have a real great voice if he or she seems to feel the song. One of the greatest writers was Kris Kristofferson. He wrote songs for many people. When he sang his own songs his voice wasn't good but with soul that fit his songs. If you don't know him look up what he did. He had a brain that would make most of us look a fool. A Rhodes scholar for 1.
It really depends on my mood at the time. Sometimes I like the singer's voice, other times it's the sound(instruments and melody), and sometimes it's the lyrics.
I usually get hooked by the melody, intrigued by the lyrics and engaged by the beat.
