Music= trait?

Do you think a person's taste in music links to particular traits? What I mean by that is: does liking a certain band suggest that the person will have to an extent, a certain characteristic? Of course it isn't guaranteed that liking a band will= [insert trait here], but I've noticed that most people who like particular bands have particular traits (if only to a small degree).

So, do you think a person's taste in music says anything about the person? Any examples?

    I think it depends on the reasons why someone listens to a type of music. If you listen to it because you like the lyrics/the message it will probably tell me a lot about you. But if you just like the sound of it - not so much.
    And if somebody just listens to something because he thinks it's cool to like it, that will also tell me something about this person.

    No, I don't think so. Most people do think this way, though. More than twice I've mentioned I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan and someone has made a comment similar to "You're a big pothead, aren't you?".

    I think society has pushed people to believe the whole "you listen to rap, you carry a gun" or "you listen to Manson you're gonna kill someone" stereotype but honestly, I don't think music alters your personality at all...if it does I really should stop listening to hill billy music before I start becoming attracted to my brother...

          I didn't mean any Band called Pie. I meant Pie as the dessert.

            Lol. I think I was joking but when you wrote about pie in a post about music, it reminded me of the band Cake. I want a girl with a short skirt and a looooooooooooooooooooong jacket.

    I recently read an article on NPR titled "You are what you hear: What your favorite music says about you" which referenced a similar article in the Guardian, "Six Songs of Me: Just why music matters so much to us". They both speak about the psychology of music and the cultural importance of it. If you are interested in the subject, I highly recommend reading the articles.

    if someone listens to the song because of its lyrics then its how he thinks and feels and this way is done usually when the song tells something about him or similar to what he likes ...!! if its upon music then that can depend on mood or the situation one is going... sad song when sad ... and rock pop when in mod to party

    I think that what a person prefers in general tells a lot about who they are, their upbringing, their personality, etc. A lot of psychics do this for money, they use keen observation skills to tell things about a person's life and that person believes that it is actually psychic, rather than just observation skills.

    So yes, I think that a person's taste in music can tell a bit about their personality. I am not saying that "Oh someone who listens to rap is uneducated and thinks they're a G" or "Someone who listens to punk rock thinks they're a rebel" or anything like that. No, when it comes to observing others, you have to look outside the box of your own localized reality and your own beliefs and opinions to get a good, accurate observation.

    I'm not really sure. I love so many different genres and artist and I can't really pick a favorite. I guess for some it might.

  • What draws one person to music could be a totally different trait than what draws another.

    Although I would agree that our music tastes are a (faulty) reflection of our inward being.

    I deleted my comment on this because nobody would answer if they saw it. I'll come back to it once it's approved and answer it properly. :P
