My bf can’t let it go

my boyfriend gets sad every time he gets reminded of my ex, whom i only dated for a little bit. he also gets sad when i say the number 28-29-30 when referring to age because i had a past of dating older guys. mind you i’m 21 and he just turned 24. whenever he hears a muffler on a car he gets sad bc i once brought up that he had one in his car, and that he’s 28. whenever he gets reminded of these things he gets sad and stays sad for quite some time. why does he do this? what should i do when he does this?

It's ok to be sad about something that is painful to think about. However, it makes a difference in how long and severe these episodes are. If he gets severely depressed for a week every time a car drives by, then he needs professional help. If he gets a little quiet sometimes then it might not be a big deal.

That said, it sounds like he may suffer from some form of anxiety and or depression. (Note: I am not a medical professional or anything, just going off of my own personal experience.) You can't reason with these kinds of feelings or control what sets them off, you just kind of have to deal with them. The best thing you can do just be supportive of him. Maybe remind him that you chose him and give him a hug. Don't try to fix his problems, don't get mad at him for feeling that way, just be there for him.

    • sometimes he will be able to let it go quickly, other times he will be quiet for an hour to two. it just depends what it is. he can’t hear my ex’s name, he can’t even really talk about age without getting sad, and when he hears mufflers he gets sad..
