My bf thinks i was abused by my mom

i dont think i was abused but my bf jokingly said i was , and this is too awkward to ask anyone so im asking the internet

i woke up with a fever , so I wanted to measure my temperature , my bf got the thermometer and offered to do it for me , Im very comfortable with him so i agreed and pulled down my pants

then he inserts it into my anus and i freak out , and tell him thats the wrong place , then I told him that when I was a kid my mom used to measure my temp from either my vagina or armpit ( if it wasnt serious) , so he laughingly said this is abuse :p

this is when we chose to ask the internet about it , does temp measurement differ between males and females?

Taking temperature isn't abuse, whichever orifice is used.

It's normal to measure temperature rectally for very small children since they tend to chew on anything put in their mouth. Chomping on a modern electronic thermometer with a plastic probe doesn't give an accurate reading. Chewing on a glass thermometer is a bad idea for obvious reasons.

I've never heard of inserting the thermometer in a girl's vagina, but maybe this was something your mom was taught by her mother, or maybe when you were an infant you complained too much about having it put in your rectum, or maybe your mom has a thing about poop. In any case, the temperature would be the same, since she would have been measuring your core body temperature wherever she inserted it.

Really, what I find most strange about your question is the off-hand mention of you and your boyfriend deciding that the best way to take your temperature was by shoving a thermometer up your under-side. These days, there are very accurate and much less invasive ways of taking body temperature.

    • Everytime i use it in my mouth it gives a totally different result , i think temp is measured from down there not only because kids chew on it but because its more accurate and stable ?

Interesting. Never seriously looked into this, which I suppose I should have, since we have a young daughter.

You're right: rectal temperature is a more accurate reading of core body temperature since the thermometer is in the core of the body.

I knew you had to be careful with taking temperature orally, since the thermometer had to be kept in place for a full minute or so, and any warm or cold liquids drunk soon before could affect the reading. I'd also always believed that oral temperature was a degree or two lower than core body, but it was an accurate reflection of core body temperature. However, it seems there have been studies which call this into question.

As far as I know, most doctors and hospitals now use tympanic thermometers - the gadgets you stick in the ear. It seems to be accepted that these give an accurate measurement of core body temperature, although the method doesn't work for everyone, you have to be careful about the "aim" of the thing, and there are other possible problems.

I suppose you could do a simple enough experiment: Now that you're feeling better, measure your temperature vaginally, then measure it rectally, and compare the two. If they're the same, then you (or your boyfriend) can obviously choose either the next time you're unwell.
