My boyfriend and his daughter eat like animals & it drives me bonkers

Okay so here’s the scoop – I love my boyfriend dearly. But he lacks a lot in the manners department. Whenever we eat, I feel so badly that I want to drop kick him in the face for smacking his lips, making noises, and shoveling food down his throat like he hasn’t eaten in a year. What makes matters worse is his 9 year old daughter has picked up her father’s horrible manners and does the same exact thing. So whenever I make a meal for us to sit down together, it’s like sitting at the table watching two piggies eat their own feces ..it’s revolting. I lose my appetite often and I just don’t even know what to do at this point. Last night it was so bad, I picked up my plate and moved from the table to in front of the tv because I just couldn’t take it anymore. I have explained to him I don’t’ know how many times that his eating habits are repulsive, and he tries sometimes – but 80% of the time it is like this. I don’t’ feel comfortable correcting his daughter either – that’s not my place. But how can I sit and have a meal with them ever if this is how it’s going to be? I want us to all enjoy the meals I make together, as a family – but I just can’t stomach all the grunting and smacking and eating with mouths open. It’s just too much. Am I a total !@#@ for feeling this way – any suggestions on how to correct it without making them cry? I’m trying to be considerate of their feelings. But I the longer it continues the more infuriated I become. HELP!!!!

This story reminds me of one of my favorite Danny DeVito lines ever. From that Matilda movie when I was a kid

You're not a stuck up snob for hating their eating habits. Terrible eating habits are terrible. I once went on a trip and one of my cousins came along. This guy was so weird and immature with his table manners. "Immature" as in the time we went to a somewhat classy restaurant and he got the bright idea to play with his butter knife, swishing it in the air. He caressed it's curvy body. Then, he proceeds to eat his food fast. He ate too much and ending up vomiting later on. His constipation diet was another thing that irked and sickened me. >_< I can't remember if I told him off or not... I think I did at the restaurant. I was so pissed at him for how he was embarrassing us with his actions that I semi-exploded.

You too could explode. Or, you could send them to eat at a classy place. If that outing doesn't make them learn how embarrassing and disgustingly they eat, I'm not sure what will. May sound cruel, but it is necessary.

Thank you so much for your reply. Believe it or not, I have taken him nice places to eat. And he seems to be able to control himself there - to a point. I feel badly that I let it bother me so much, but it's just gross and off-putting. I'm scared I'm going to flip out on him and come across as a total jerk, but at the same time - I don't understand why I have to keep repeating myself to please...stop smacking your lips...chew with your mouth closed, stop shoveling it in like someone is trying to take it from you and you haven't eaten in a month! The more I put up with it - the more it makes me want to RUN!!!!

Yuck someone does the same thing in my family, and yes its so repulsive. A sibling had picked up this habit and I decide this was nit going to happen . I gave them an ultimatum, of course they chose the latter. So I suggest dangle sex as the ultimatum if he doesn't stop his disgusting and irrelevant habit before its to late.

In your case this must be normal but remember this - you cannot change them anymore.
