My cat loves mint?

My cat seems to have an obsession with mint/menthol smells. One time I was wearing an icy hot patch for back pain. I lay on the couch for awhile and then got up. Afterwards, my cat started continuously licking the spot where the patch had touched the couch. I had to move him in case he made himself sick.

Today I set some mint lifesavers on my bed, and my cat started licking the spot where they had been! He even found where I had put the lifesavers later. Is it normal for a cat to go so crazy over mint?

    I once had a chameleon who loved a pair of some old rusty red pliers. He straddled them and rubbed against them similarly to the way a cat would. I guess animals have their vices too.

    I have taken up smoking catnip lately. Catnip is a type of mint so it makes sense that cats would like other types of mint.

    Maybe it smells like catnip? Another name for catnip is catmint. My dog went nuts over catnip once, it was weird. Haha.

          My dog stole my cats catnip mouse toy but I think she likes the texture, rather than the catnip itself

    years ago i had a cat what loved the hell outta olives

    shed rub her face on the olive and rub it round the floor for 10 or 15 minutes then eat it

    i also had a pickup truck what needed a transfer case and called the local junkyard
    the feller said we gots one and it says here on the computer that its got mint gears!!!

    i said i dont give a fuck what they taste like ill be down with my 75 bucks

    I think mint is in the same family as cat nip. Not exactly sure, lol. My cat is also attracted to the Icy Hot patches and spray. He licked it off my boyfriend's back.

    As busforbreakfast pointed out, mint and catnip are related, so it makes sense that it makes cats go a little wacko.

    One of my neighbors grows spearmint plants in their yard and whenever my cat wanders over there, she scrubs against the plant, purrs, and occasionally chews on the leaves.

    Does the cat get stoned on the mint? I had a cat once who got himself extremely stoned rolling on a catnip (catmint) bush in the hot sun - he was a very funny sight lurching around and purring loudly until it wore off

      I read that about 30% of cats are not affected by catnip but all of my cats loved it.

        Just like that other fun weed, but probably different percentages? Certainly the cat I described loved it, but the other two I've had weren't interested: one was old and cranky and didn't like anything much and the other one was a crazy burmese who would've been even weirder stoned

      Another funny sight was watching a hedgehog stoned on hash trying to roll himself up into a protective ball. He couldn't do it. At least I THINK it was funny, but maybe it was just me. I was high on hash also.

          Yeah, it was my first time, probably the hedgehog's first time also. The guys who did that to us thought it was all pretty funny too!
