My daughter is obsessed with japanese cartoons?

My daughter is 15 years old and she is obsessed with Japanese cartoons. Not only does she watch them day in and day out but she doesn't even watch the versions where they speak english. I thought she'd be way past the phase of being obsessed with cartoons but she isn't and she keeps asking for merchandise. I don't want my daughter to get picked on in school. Should I encourage her to keep watching cartoons?

Yes, let her keep watching 763
No, don't let her watch any more 130
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Why should this be a bad thing? If she watches the Japanese original versions, that just means she is interested in a foreign language and culture and has found a hobby.

Stopping a child doing something because you feel they will be bullied causes the child to feel like the hypothetical bullies would be right and that it would be her fault if she was bullied. Don't do that.

Hello, I am Emma. I am a friendly teenager that will forcefully answer your questions without Concent; your daughter sounds like the best person in the whole entire world, I personally love anime and speak Japanese myself, it's a fantastic language, but you shouldn't stop anyone for that matter let alone your daughter for having an interest in something that millions of people love and enjoy. I get bullied at my school not for loving anime, but for being a general target, so if you want to stop any kind of bullying the answer is not to make someone else miserable in the process for trying to make them happy.

I found this post because my 15 yr old daughter and her group of friends are obsessed with Roku a Japanese Volleyball cartoon. The problem I'm having is that there's A LOT of Kinky, Homosexual content in these Anemations, not just KID stuff. All of these girls are Honors students, are involved in sports and seem to be pretty Geeky. She's even dropped Spanish class to take Chinese as one of her electives. What's a parent to do, when there are so many other things that they can be doing. I'm at a loss!!

I am now 21 and that does sound like me and my friends when we were all 15. The teachers called us the good group because trust me most other 15 year olds are doing and watching much worse (actually having sex, sexual experimenting, drinking, doing drugs or other illegal activities) It is completely fine what they are doing now. They sound like a good group of kids. It brings back happy high school memories for me. Makes me want to have a group anime binge with my friends again.

I think your talking about 'Haikyuu' and i doubt all the Kinky, homosexual content your talking about is coming from the show itself but mostly from the fandom. (Even thought some shows do have sutext on purpose to get more viewers) Trust me Haikyuu is just a sports anime and is tame compared to other genres. You see being anime is a medium it can be for all ages so there are some that would be considered 18+, so yes anime is not just kids stuff.
Your daughter and her friends are what you would call the western definition of an Otaku. Pretty sure you've heard of pokemon Go or PlayStations, Nintendo. Japans creations (Anime, manga, video games) have had a LOT of influence on the west and it even has its own sub culture, Have you ever heard of comic con (a convention fro all kinds of fans) or cospaly? Millions of people go to these, its just about having fun with thousands of people that like the same things as you. If you don't believe me look up on Haikyuu, Look up Japans culture and their outlook on certain topics and the things they have created and how it has greatly influenced the west its really not that weird or bad.
As her mother you can try to get her into other things but i would not advise you to take this away from her. Anime helped me and a lot of people growing up. I say as long as she keeps a good balance in her life then shes good, (Its just a hobby but there are some known to be TOO obsessed) at the end of the day if it makes her happy i say let her be.

You mean anime? Yeah I was obsessed with those too and I still so,me times watch them. They're harmless cartoons, let her watch whatever the goddamned fuck she wants.

Just make sure her grades are fine - if those are good then just keep off her ass, let her watch anime, let her buy wigs and go to conventions - whatever she wants. My parents had no problem with my obsession. They're cartoons. Calm the fuck down I still watch Spongebob.

It seems that by posting here you have some doubts about this obsession, so be the adult, because I'm pretty sure you know what's best for your daughter who is only 15.
Obsession is not healthy, no matter what it's for. As a parent you should guide your daughter into a broader world and try to help her expand her interests.

Indeed indeed, keep her watching and sell her deals off the merch. But for one, don’t call it animeS or Japanese CARTOONS, cuz that’ll trigger a tiny bit of her. From when I was 9 to now, I’ve loved and been obsessed with anime. She won’t get picked on at school, because there’s nothing to be ashamed of, and it’s completely honest. She’s something called and otaku, there’s nothing wrong with us watching “cartoons”. Must of them are meant for teens and above. It’s completely normal, and there’s a lot more of us in the world than you think.

I am now an adult and I have been watching anime since early childhood. I was never picked on at school because I liked anime. It is fine to let her continue watching because it introduces her to another culture and other ways to view something. I know I have learned a lot from anime.

An interesting fact for two years my high school creative writing teacher had a theory all of the students who watches anime tends to have an easier time with creative writing then students who didn't, I must say my friends and I often proved her right.

I'd say she's completely fine. The 'japanese cartoons' that she's watching are called anime, and they are a lot different from regular cartoons. A lot less childish too. The fact that she watches the original japanese version probably just means that she's interested in a foreign language ( or it's just because most english dubbed anime sound like shit, excuse my language ). Plus, by watching anime she can learn a lot about their completely diffrent culture. Of course, if it gets a little too crazy it's probably better to tell her to take it easy for a while, but as long as she does well in school she's completely fine :)

It isn't a cartoon it's anime! It should be fine as long as she still has a life and bathes regularly. ^w^

I Just love to watch Anime; Japanese films & Japanese TV dramas in the original Japanese language with English subtitles since I was a kid!
Actually Lotsa kids enjoy Anime ( not considered cartoons as there is much more teen-angst drama)
Not those terrible English-dubbed cuz the voices never match the person!

Here's a thought! Try watching with her. They can be very entertaining! (also reading subtitles actually helped me to speed read books)
Also since we do so much business with Japan, learning Japanese can be a boost to your career!

Japanese can open doors to employment in a variety of occupations such as in virtually any business related to the semiconductor industry, electronics, engineering, manufacturing, certain agricultural industries, teaching, translation, interpreting, and travel. In the United States it can also lead to an increase rapport with Japanese employees especially in the engineering field, that may be learning English or with contacts with Japanese companies abroad. In a culture marked by a very traditional culture, learning Japanese greatly improves your chances of success in job markets dealing with Japanese companies. Studying Japanese can be a fun task, as well as an important one. Despite being overshadowed in the news by the economic rise of countries like China and India, Japan remains the second largest economy in the world. Japanese exports of automobiles and continuing strong manufacturing electronics and robotics are increasing. Japan remains an economic powerhouse of Asia second only to the United States in total gross domestic product. Japan is especially known for its engineering and manufacturing strengths. Over 140 million people speak Japanese throughout the world today.

Even if your simply a casual traveler, learning it can also be beneficial since most of the sign boards and instructions in Japan are naturally written in Japanese, though English is common. Studying the language to order food, communicate with locals and talk with taxi drivers will enhance the experience of your travels significantly, if travel is your primary goal.

Studying Japanese is one step to joining the ranks of businesses oriented toward the growing market of South America. Japanese is one of the great languages of the world. Studying the language is becoming part of a world-class education. Japanese is spoken in Japan as well as in communities of Japanese.

Japanese is not an easy language to learn (but much easier than Chinese) so most Americans (and even 99% Japanese-Americans) cannot speak it which make an American who speak Japanese in so much demand. Plus most Japanese cannot learn English.

  • Personally, the back of my phone case is namikaze minato ( a character from naruto). As long as this "obsession" doesnt take presidence over things like eating sleeping and having an active social life, everything should be ok.

How do you assume children liking cartoons means they are going to be picked on. That is what kids do. They watch cartoons. Well most of them do. In fact Anime is very popular among children that age. If you do not believe look up how old Naruto is. Its normal your child likes cartoons and to take them away from her would probobly make her look weird since when she goes to school everyone else is probobly going to be watching them. I have no idea why you believe kids+cartoons=Freak in your mind but generally cartoons are made to entertain kids. As well as that the fact she is watching it in another language might mean she one day will pick of japeniese. If she is obsessed enough to learn japaneise culture maybe one day she can put multilingual on her resume and visit japan. People who are this into anime from what I seen tend to be very intelligent as they study everything about the subject.

If it gets to the point where she's not doing her homework, not eating, not sleeping then it's a problem. If not, then it's fine. Kids go through phases and if she likes them let her watch them. I don't think the fear of her being picked on at school is a good reason to take her away from anything.
Not that I think she'll get picked on for watching anime as a lot of kids do it, but taking her away from it for that reason is like teaching her to be someone she's not in order to blend into society and I highly discourage that.

Indeed, she is watching anime and I'll go ahead and tell you that anime is VERY popular and insanely numerous. Just like people who don't play video games, its easy to look at something you don't enjoy or understand yourself and judge it negatively but it may be a good idea to try watching one yourself with an unbiased mind first. Anime shows are quite varied and can be very serious with life lessons, humorous with comedy, fantasy with powers or mechs, or down to earth with school life, sports or romance. Nothing you wouldn't see in a movie or TV show, just in a Japanese animated style.

A lot of anime are very long with 100-200+ episodes and each episode starts off where the last stopped, usually with a great deal of plot and character development that gets you hooked such as a guy who used to get bullied a lot becoming a respected boxing pro. I say let her watch, they are harmless but she really shouldn't ask for expensive anime items all the time unless she plans to buy it herself.

I don't see the problem. Well actually, believe it or not there are a ton of weeboos out there (that's what you call anime obsessed people) I think she'll fine where she belongs. However, the merchandise part can get expensive so I recommend you encourage her to get a job to pay for the things she wants. I don't think she'll picked on though, I'm pretty sure she'll find people who like anime as much as she. In the meantime try to join her, ask if you and her could watch a show in English. Maybe you've heard of Inuyasha, try bonding with her, don't look at this as a way to treat your daughter differently.

It's called anime and it's very popular. Just let her watch them, maybe even ask her to show some to you if you are concerned. Animes aren't mainly for children, though many of them are.
