My dog smells something...

Ok, so me and a friend of mine were taking my dog for a walk around my neighbor hood the other day. we went along the outside perimeter, and cut through the little wooded area with a concrete walk path through it. well, we were looking for the hide out that we made when we were in like, fifth grade. we heard someone coming so we ran back to the sidewalk...rite? well, there was a dude walking through, and my dog is ALWAYS nice to other people. my friend and i had to hold onto his leash, and he was jumping around, barking and growling. and the hair on his back was all standing up. he almost jumped on the guy. when we calmed my dog down, we said sorry, and said that he never does that, and that we were really sorry. the guy just ran away. we thought we smelled drugs on him, and we were really scared. we knew that if we didnt have my dog with us, he would have done something to us... but my dog never acts like that, and he is nowhere near being a police dog, and he is a labrador retriver...is this normal?

Sure, dogs can smell drugs, but even more so, they can sense energy, like if a person has good or bad energy. Maybe your dog sensed this guy was up to no good and could have possibly done harm to you, so the dog reacted. Give your dog a big hug and an extra treat, cause he saved you from something that could have gone wrong.

That's not true that dogs only bark at "bad" people. My retarded dogs that I love with all my heart.. freak out anytime rings the bell and for at least 15 minutes onward while their in the house. I blame my parentals for not training them a little bit, it's actually embarrassing. It's true though dogs sense a bit of energy and probably assessed the situation to defends himself and you as well.

Dogs usually know good and bad people. I wish I had listened to my dog I had a long time ago. He never liked my bf. Always barked and growled. Kept close to me. That guy was a real creep. Once the haze of inlike wore off I realized what a ass he was. Always listen to your animals. They sense things that we can't.

I once had a very sweet loving dog that never growled at anyone until one day walking along the road a retarded girl stepped up to pat her and she growled and wanted to bite her. I think the girl scared my dog because she moved or smelled different to everyone else

I think you were surprised by the guy and your dog knew that he made you uneasy. Dogs are good at figuring out when you are scared. They are also instinctively protective of their owners.

As for whether anything would have happened, its hard to tell. Do you live in a city? Is there much crime in your area?

Yah, drug dogs aren't angry when they smell drugs. They have to be trained to do that. Actually, when a police dog smells drugs, they think they are finding their toy. Trainers will actually sprinkle a ball with coacaine, and they will play fetch with the ball. Then, they'll eventually hide the ball and have the dog retrieve it by smelling it. They associate the smell of drugs, a concept dogs know nothing about, with their favourite toy. I think the dog was just sensing behaviour more than anything else.
