My job is making us wear name tags with our full name now

Is this normal? We had our first names now they want to add our last names, it's a retail job. My last name is rare only my family have that name and I'm the only one in the world with my full name because it's that rare. I feel uncomfortable because now customers will be able to look me up online and find my address.

I told my boss I had a stalker at my old job he found out my last name and he was at the cafe near my house standing there and waited for me and stalked me they won't listen to me they say it's better because it's professional I disagree I don't think it's any different. Go to any place they usually have first names only.

I don't want stalkers. My coworker had someone slash her tire because they were mad at her for not accepting a coupon these people are scary is this normal now I have to have my full name out for all to see?

I think your concerns are valid and that this is not a reasonable decision by your management. It's an unfortunate fact that the world is full of whack-jobs, and it's irresponsible of management to force employees to give them the information they need to track down employees outside of work.

I fail to see what's gained by a business letting customers know the true full name of retail staff they deal with. As long as a disgruntled or particularly satisfied customer can identify the worker with enough accuracy that management knows who they're talking about, that should be all that's necessary.

In fact, having Googled this, I see that there are places where there are laws which prevent employers from requiring employees to have their full names on nametags for exactly the reasons you mention. Disgustingly enough, it's often nurses and other healthcare workers who require this protection.

If your employer isn't willing to allow you to use a different surname to your real name on your nametag, then it sounds like it's time for you to find a place to work where management lives in the real world and at least pretends to have some interest in the well-being of staff once they leave the premises.

I agree with you it is weird that they wont compromise. Atleast let you have an alias.

I dont beilive you. That's a serious security risk. I'd simply not wear my name tag if they did that and find a new job. Retail jobs are easily replaced

I had a job that made be wear a name tag with my real first name on it, and shortly thereafter I went in the back, and made myself a new name tag with a different name on it.

I don't normally agree with the 'easy to say' solution, but in this case I would have to.
This sounds like a big safety issue.

Depending where you live, that may be illegal. Employers have t protect their employees personal information in a lot of places. A bunch of lawyers also offer a brief consult at no charge, I'd look into that if I were you.

  • That's really bad. A lot of places don't have a name badge at all even for first name because the risk of stalkers is unfortunately high. I don't think they can make you wear one with your full name, especially if you've had a stalker before. I would refuse or agree to have a badge with a fake name on it.

I worked for years in nuclear plants and our badges had our full names on them.

I think it would be acceptable at a nuclear plant, but unacceptable at a restaurant/bar, or retail establishment. 🙂

That's not the same, though, is it?

You're talking about a closed, professional environment where there were likely several people with the same first and last names and accountability was crucial; the OP is talking about a retail environment where employees have to deal with every nutjob that wanders in off the street.

      • You're right, it was bound to be a federal job where for example they could give you a polygraph at a moment's notice

OP is to provide temporary customer service, not a media campaign
